Looking for a video card to hold me over

Hello, my current setup is:

Processor: AMD64 3700+ San Diego S939 2.2GHz

Motherboard: DFI LanParty nF4

Ram: OCZ 2GB ram DDR2

Video card: Asus x800xl

Power Supply: FSP Fortron AX500-A Blue Storm II 500W ATX12V 2.2 20/24PIN Power Supply W/ 120MM

Basically my problem is my video card doesn't support shader model 3.0 so I can't run any new games, nothing is compatible. I want to build a new computer when new tech comes out, but need something to boost this one so it can at least run modern games even at medium settings.

I was looking at the Radeon HD 4770

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16814121326

Wondering what brand I should go with for this card, will the rest of my system be fine with it? Will my power supply run it?

Also any other recommendations?

Thanks.

Here is a nice XFX 4870 1gb with 5-egg rating for under $150 shipped.

with that single core cpu I would certainly not buy a very fast card like that.

OP when do you actually plan on building a new pc?

2 months.

But I want to bring this comp up to some sort of level that it can play recent games.

The x800xl vid card can't run anything because it doesn't support sm3.0

I'd get a Radeon 4850 512MB. Sure you can't use it to it's full capacity with your system, but when you build your Phenom II system you'll be able to make nice use of it. It should run fine on a 500W PSU.

If you're gonna build in two months I wouldn't worry about getting a card matched to your processor. Just get one that will fit well with your planned build/budget

I would just get something really cheap like the 4670. then in 2-3 months when he builds a new pc he can then jump on the 5850 and just sell the 4670.

The goal is just to keep this pc around, so if I can get a decent card that will be a good upgrade and won't cost much then that would be good.

So a 4670 would fit well?

Basically I need a card that will run newer games and will run with the rest of my pc. The x800xl doesn't support sm 3.0 :*(

yeah a 4670 would be the absolute most I would get since you are going to just keep it in the old pc. heck I would probably just get a 4650 and save a few more bucks because with your cpu you will never see the difference in most game anyway.

A 4670 will spank an X800XL. Once you build a new system you might want something with more pizazz, however. But then again it's very cheap, so you can just buy a 5850 in a couple months with you're new build. I'm beginning to be a fan of this idea.

9600GSO, 4650, 4670, etc. All of these will be a tremendous upgrade for that system, and not cause a lot of power draw / heat / noise for the most part.

Yeah that 1GB won't be capable of running with enough eye-candy to make a difference between it and the 512mb version with the combo of that GPU (4670), and CPU (3700+ Single-Core).

512MB will run beautifully, and is a sensible choice for that setup. Honestly, the 4670 will be somewhat cpu-limited with that single-core 3700. 4650 or 9600GSO probably make more sense, if you can save some $ that way. But the savings won't be much, you'll be happy either way.

Seems I can get the 9600GSO for $40

http://www.techreport.com/articles.x/15559

Found this for 4670 v.s 9600GSO.

Meh I'll just go with the 4670 and spend the extra cash, not worry about it down the line.

Thanks for all the input appreciate it guys.

Well that should be full of win. Honestly if the price difference is that large, the 9600GSO is the way to go. You'll be really happy with any of them, AT VC&G wins again! Best wishes.

I got my 9600gso for about $40 AR as well. imho that is definitely the way to go, that card will obliterate the x800xl and shouldn't be held back too much by your old athlon.

Yea after taxes/shipping on both cards the 9600GSO came out to $80 the 4670 came out to $100.

After reading some comparison articles the 4670 does come out ahead and in some spots by quite a margin.

So for $20 meh I'll take the extra performance.

Thanks for all the help guys, settling on the 4670.

The 9600GSO was def close, but for $20 more can't go wrong with the 4670 I don't think.

seriously with your single core cpu you are never going to know the difference anyway. the 4670 and 9600gso may be lower end cards now but they are several times faster than high end cards were when your cpu was really relevant for gaming. throw in the fact that you are building a whole new pc in two months and you should just get the cheaper card.
