Can anybody recommend a good video capture card? I don't want to change my video card to get this feature, I need just a basic stand alone card.

ATI TV Wonder seems to be a decent card. About 45.00.
Also the Hauppauge Capture card for about the same price.

I asked the same question in a recent thread and a lot of people recommended Leadtek's WinTV 2000. If it is for a digital camera, then any firewire card will do. They are all created equal.

Bovinicus, I'm just looking for a card that will allow me to digitize and burn short clips from videos.

Whats your system? I have heard that ATI TV Wonder has horrendous issues with XP.

GoodToGo, I've read about the problems in XP, but I'm using 2000 so that shouldn't be a problem. However, there seem to be complaints about the All-in-One card in general. Do you know anything about that?

Good now that you have Win2000, you probably will have less issues with video capture. I dont know if the All in Wonder have had any issues since I am looking for a cheap TV tuner myself. Right now, in addition to Hauppauge, the AVERMEDIA tv Stereo is looking ok and is pretty reasonable as well. You might want to check that out as well. Since the ATI video cards can be a hit or miss situation with XP, I will just stick wioth the above two choices.

GoodToGo, I was checking out the AverMedia earlier. They do look good. What I want to do is burn some short clips from video tapes that I can play back on a TV. Do you know what resolution is required for that?

I am sorry, I have no idea about the resolution since I am not an expert in video editing  According to some reviews, the software that comes with it is pretty crappy though and people have had better experience with using powerlink VCR.

Edit: Found this.

I have an ATI TV Wonder with a VHS VCR under Win2K. I've had success with ATI MMC and VirtualDub with the VCR hooked up to the composite inputs on the TV Wonder. However, since I got my miniDV camcorder last June, I have been using it's pass-thru feature to capture in DV format through the Firewire port. I then use TMPGenc to encode to MPEG or MPEG2. This is better IMHO.
