looking for a very simple program

Basically, I want to do some testing on an odd display to see the true refresh rate. I can give the display a signal from ~10-240hz, but I need to test the actual update speed of the display.

I'm looking for a piece of software that flashes something on the screen, with the flash speed controlled by a slider or text box.
 
visually estimating by paying attention to where the image tears and looking for held/doubled frames.

I suspect that the image is being displayed at either 40.9, 48, or 60hz, want to confirm.
 
it will show the current refresh rate in the OSD, but I'm making an interface conversion board that will allow higher refresh rates through less simultaneous inputs (currently it uses 4 slow interfaces for the input) and want to find what the actual update speed is.

It will take (and display, according to the osd) refresh rates of up to 240hz. I doubt that the panel is actually updating this quickly, hence the need for verification.

the control board is implemented with six large fpgas that I don't have the access to source or other design details for, so I have to estimate the actual panel update speed.
 
couldn't you just measure the electrical signal at a point between the control board and the screen? I imagine you could make some kind of sense out of it.

what is the output of the fpgas? maybe slap a scope on the output?
 
taking it apart and probing it with a scope is an option, but I'd rather not have to take it apart. the hardware and software is completely closed, and I can't even get datasheets for all the parts.
 
May not be accurate enough but I'm sure someone could whip something like this up in Javascript or some other scripting language fairly quickly.
