Looking for a USB / FW PCI card.

Synomenon

Lifer
I've been looking for a USB / firewire PCI card with these features:

NEC USB chipset
Any firewire chipset
At least 3 external USB ports
At least one internal firewire header or port

Anyone seen anything like this?

Link fixed, sorry.

Here are the 10 cards on the Egg:

IDK if any meet your chip specs, but there aren't many to check out.

I'd look on fleaBay for add on cards. Clever search strings will narrow the hits. I didn't see any combo cards with NEC chip.

Geeks.com usually has a fair selection of ports cards too.

I've looked at all the cards on Newegg. None have what I'm looking for. I've googled around for days and haven't found one with the specs. or "features" I listed above.

What about this one - looks like something you might be able to use: http://www.geeks.com/details.a...AUA-3020A-BULK&cat=CCD but I can't tell if it has any internal connectors, but it has NEC USB and TI for FW. Maybe the geeks can fill you in. Sometimes these cards have a row of pins solder pads so you could add a pin header if you are handy. Looking like you may have to settle for something less or use two separate cards.

Looks like we have a winner.

The model # is: FF-U2-PCI

Googling that, I found it going for as low as $29.67

Thanks corkyg and everyone who contributed to this thread!

That card does not say what chipset it has and the OP original request was for 3 USB External and that card only has 2 External USB. But if he thinks that will do his job, I hope it works for him the way he wants it to.

Yes it does say - NEC chipset in the USB side. Scroll down to this:

"usb firewire PCI card Specs:
Provides Five usb 2.0 / usb 1.1 ports ( 3 External + 2 Internal) Has USB Type A downstream connector and USB 5Pin Pin header both on board Compliant with Universal Serial Bus Specification Revision 2.0 (Data Rate 1.5/12/480 Mbps) All USB ports can handle high-speed (480 Mbps), full-speed (12 Mbps), and low-speed (1.5 Mbps) transaction.
Chipset : NEC "

And it is simple to run an internal USB header to an external case port.

Corkyg's find:

NEC USB chipset - Check
Any firewire chipset - Check (even has a TI firewire chipset!)
At least 3 external USB ports - Check
At least one internal firewire header or port - Check (has one internal 6-pin firewire port)

The other site I found that has this is called cooldrives.com. I went to whois.net and it says macdrives.com and cooldrives.com are registered by / under the same entity. I wonder why they want almost twice as much for this card at the macdrives site vs. cooldrives.

Because Macs cost more than PCs, and Mac users are used to that. 🙂

Damn, they're discontinued. Placed the order yesterday and got an email today that the order is canceled because the card has been discontinued for some time. Wonder why they still have it up on all their sites.

Ah well, the search goes on then.
