Looking for a top notch 19" CRT (NOT LCD).

Hi.

I'm looking for a very nice 19" CRT for my father. I wanted to get him an LCD, but he wants to run really low resolutions (big icons) so he can work at the computer without his glasses. I know... I know... It's what he wants though. All of the LCD's that I've seen look like a POS at lower resolution, so I want to go with a CRT. Besides, he has plenty of room on his desk for a monitor, so space is not an issue.

That being said, I want to find him an excellent 19". Text clarity is at the utmost importance. I'm not looking for a 21" because they are too large IMO. I have a 21" myself that I use for gaming and for the extra 2" of screen space, it doesn't justify the extra size or weight of the cabinet.

Anyway.. If you have any suggestions, please let me know.

Not sure about the new Iiyama's but I have a Vision Master 450 Pro. This version if I recall correctly has far better refresh rates at high resolutions than the newer ones. So, if you can find one it is really worth a look.

Check and see if Mitsubishi still has their Diamond Pro series. My 900U is still as good as new and it's about 4 years old. Aperture grill and flat screen.

You can look at Viewsonic G90F or P95F - the Perfectly Flat series - or something along those lines....

Perhaps NEC/Mitsubishi DP930SB-BK 19" Flat Aperture Grille CRT Monitor. Mitsubishi makes good monitors i hear but I havent personally used one. If your dad is going to have 800x600 resolution, I think that any 19inch monitor will have a good clarity at those resolutions. What makes a good 19 inch monitor is ability to have higher refersh rate at higher resolutions and clarity beyond 1280x1024. That is where you will notice the greatest difference so you shoulndt worry too much about distinguishing them at lower resolutions.

I have the VM pro 454 Gotta love it, currently running 1600x1200@85Hz It has really rich colors....it is super.

8 months ago i got a viewsonic 19" G90fb from Dell for under $200 total....only cheaper monitor I could find that could do 1600x1200 over 72 refresh rate. Awesome picture. Very happy with it. I'm going to get another one! It's black in color. they do say flat screen , but really is curved with a flat piece of glass in the front....but never the less, it's a great monitor for windows / gaming. Would recommend dell, good company to get a monitor from.

Samsung 900NF....check the reviews at cnet.com, they just did a big 19in roundup....i personally like diamondtron tubes for the highest quality...

Because Samsung 955DF is a budget monitor. It has terrible refresh rates at higher resolutions.

If you want a nice 19 inch, look at NEC/Mitsubishi DP930SB-BK 19" Flat Aperture Grille CRT. If you use Dell coupons you can usually pick that up for around $270 shipped.

If your father is going to use the monitor at low resolution with big icons without glasses it probably does not matter if you get the best or the cheapest. He is not going to see or appreciate super high resolution or super sharpness. He will see everything in soft focus with the edges blurred.
