Looking for a Thermalright Ultra 120/Extreme

Red Storm

I can't for the life of me find either the 120 or the extreme for sale anywhere. Every store is sold out or backordered. Anyone know of a place where I can get it?

SVC Compucycle has them as does their subsidiary Heatsink Factory. To be honest I would suggest waiting a month or so. I believe(unconformable) that Thermalright is attempting to clear the current stock out as most of them have issues with the base being convex so that they can release a new batch or a rev.2.

Go for it!

I can't see paying $17 extra just to get the heatsink the way it ought to be from the factory, sorry.

Doesn't matter. You're not the one thinking about buying it. AFAIK, any HS will benefit from a lap job. Pay 5.00 to $10.00 in material, or pay someone else $17.00 to do it.

You can get a 5 grit 3M kit for like $3 at most hardware/auto chains. It is a PITA though and $17 isn't a bad price *IF* they do a good job.

IMHO the finish crazy pc gives it isn't much if any better than a factory job on good quality coolers, just makes sure it's flat.

So, a good quality HS will not benefit from a lapping job?

From a lapping job? they will, but, not significantly and only if you go beyond the 1000 grit where crazy PC stops. I've lapped to 2000 and people go beyond that even. The main advantage to lapping is twofold, make the base flat and smooth. Flat maximizes the overall surface area of contact and smooth allows the heat to travel more easily and quickly into the heatsink.

In theory, a good enough lapping job on both a hsf and on an IHS could negate the need for a TIM. TIM's only real purpose is to bridge the tiny gaps between the two. I've never seen it in practice but, it's theoretically possible.
