Looking for a replacement of Ghost 2003 (dos ver) to image Vista.

For my WinXP backup needs I have always used (and Loved) Ghost2003. I run it off a boot CD, so I dont have to bother with unrelieable floppies. It boots fast, and I can image my PCs straight from the boot disc - No need to install anything in Windows. I like that.
Its been simple straight forward and relieable for my backup needs.

Since Ghost03 doesnt play nice with Vista or Win7 cause they use different methods to boot then previous window OSes.

Im look for a Relieable program that doesnt need to be installed that fully supports vista/win7. Bassically an equilelent to ghost03 that supports vista/7.

Thank

Acronis True Image 2009, build 9646 does that easily with Vista and Win7. Older TI versions prior to 11 will not do Vista without some post-clone repair work.

TI only needs to be installed long eno0ugh to create the bootable CD or DVD. I always create the ISO file and make my media from that as needed. Once I create the media, I uninstall the program.

Clonezilla will do it if you can get by the unfriendly GUI. 🙂

Have you actually tried Ghost 2003 with Vista?

I've been using it successfully with V64 since it was released...

Yea, but have you done a restore from the images an successfully boot to the OS?

If so, did you use the -FDSP switch with Ghost or the BCDEDIT's in Vista? Just curiuos.

Thank

OK - what exactly is the end game? Restore is a function associated with Backup. The two go together. Backup is done to nother HDD in most cases, and then restoration is required to put the backup into useable format.

Cloning is a birect bit-by-bit image of the drive to another drive and requires no restoration. Simply switch drives and boot.

The end game is to end up with a reliable backup using a imaging app that runs completely in its own enviroment - Thats all. The complete drive itsn't "fully" copied bit by bit. Previous cloning application would zero out the disk signature, so when you restore the image to another drive (or the same drive for that matter) the OS with re-reconize the drive. But for some reason Vista's boot loader is unforgiving of this change, and you will run into issues with the restored image not being able to boot unless running a repair on the disk./

OK - that makes sense. I have experienced that Vista boot problem you mention -with Acronis TI, but that was cured with version 11.

And, with the TI prepared boot CD (Rescue Media) you can do all of the backup, restore, clone, etc., functions in a totally neutral environment with a Linux GUI.

I've had some problems with ghost but Acronis True Image 2009 has been really great for me so I ended up buying it recently.

Yep, I've restored from the images many, many times...I've imaged it over and over and used the images without any problems.

I don't use any switches, always partition only, and saving on an NTFS drive...never had a single issue.

Thats good to hear ajskydiver. I had no such luck. I tried without switches, and with the -fdsp switches. It was a no-go.

The GOOD news is that I just successfully made a backup/restore using Ghost 11.5 via PCDOS. I always thought that ghost 2003 was the last version made that booted into the DOS enviroment. Well after days upon days of researching the web I found out that Ghost Solution Suite 2.5 has the ablitly to make bootable disc/usb/etc using ghost 11.5 and booting into PC-DOS or WinPE. I made a PC-DOS cd, booted it up. It looks the same as 2003 (with a few more options). And did a Partition to Image, then Image to Partition on a different Drive, and vista boot with any issues! Woot!.

In my research I came across a lot of people that were tring to get ghost 2003 to work with vista. well, version 11.5 is the answer to that one!
