Looking for a replacement for a 9700 Pro...

I'm not sure about budget as I have no idea what cards cost these days, but I'd like something mid-range for casual gaming. Must be AGP as my board doesn't support PCI-E.
 
Price range? Do you want a replacement 9700P (10-15% faster 9800P ~$100 used, ~$125 new), or a faster card (~$160 6600GT is slightly faster, ~$285 6800GT is twice as fast)?
 
Sorry, I should have specified that I want a faster card.

Also, am I to understand that a card like the ATi X700 is both AGP and PCI-E compatible?
 
Since you said mid-range I'd suggest a geforce 6600GT. Give me a more accurate price range and it'll make are recommendations easier.

Edit: Don't get the X700, any variant of it. The 6600GT has SM3.0 and is faster in every game.
 
I don't think upgrading to a 6600 GT or below would be so worthwhile, youd probably want a 6800 card to see a real benefit.

I'm a complete noob when it comes to this stuff, but the x700 has twice the memory, does it not? 256 verus 128MB.

This guy probably has an AXP-2200+ or somthing.

please tell us your system specs,

Unless you have an A64, anything more than a 6800nu and your gonna be cpu bottlenecked.
 
Well, $300 will get you a 6800GT - pretty darn fast. What kind of processor/memory do you have though? Obviously we won't overspend here if the processor will be the bottleneck.

Don't buy based on memory size.

Chech out benchmarks intead. There are 256mb cards that get destroyed by 128mb cards.

For something cheap, I agree with the 6600gt suggestion.

For something more, go with a plain 6800 or a 6800gt if you can afford it.
 
If you absolutely do not plan on buying a PCI-E system within the next year, a new card would be in order, but if you do want a PCI-E system sometime in the near future, you should overclock your 9700 pro and hang in there. I'm also using one, and I am very suprised at how powerful it is still, but If you're looking for a new AGP card though and have your mind set on it, I would reccomend this very good deal in a 6600GT at newegg, link to product. Another option would be to get a 6800 link to product There is a soft-mod available for that particular card which you can read up on here. Either one of those cards will be faster than a Radeon 9700 pro. And the cost isn't that bad if you plan to stick with your current system. Good luck choosing 🙂

As opposed to what? PCI-E? Not really. If you have 300 bucks to spend get a 6800GT AGP card for about $275.00. You won't be disappointed.

This question confuses me. Make sure whatever card you buy is an AGP card, not a PCI-E card.
 
You might also look into the X800XL... (although the AGP version doesn't have the price advantage over the 6800GT that the PCI-E version does, I think)
 
For 200, dont get the 6600GT.

The 6800NU is just a little bit more.

For $300, 6800GT hands down.

Its a step above both cards.

You can get many video cards (X700, 6600GT, 6800) with either an AGP or a PCIe interface. You can't get a single card that will connect to either interface, though.

Those were $CDN. A 6800GT costs $550 in Canada. 6600GT is usually $240-300.
