Looking for a recommendation - weightlifting shin guards

So as some of you know I have been doing crossfit for a couple of months now. It is going well, but some of the workouts are taking a serious toll on my legs. And by serious toll, I mean that they are ripping the hell out of my shins. Anytime I do a workouts with deadlifts, cleans, snatches, etc., my shins come out looking like the girl's face at the end of the movie Carrie. I don't really care, except that I am a bit concerned about possible infection - particularly as the wounds never have enough time to heal before they are re-aggravated.

Looking online it seems like this is a pretty common issue, and I see that there are some shin guards available for weightlifting. Some seem to be nothing more than thick socks, whereas others come close to being soccer style shin guards. Any suggestions/thoughts as to which style/type I should try? I would prefer something that is relatively unobtrusive, as I would probably have to wear them throughout a 45+ minute workout.

Thanks in advance.

Use athletic tape. Or, don't scrape you shins. Or, man up. Throw some peroxide if you must after wards on them and be done with it.

I wear thick sweatpants on my deadlift days.

They also make deadlifting "suits" if you will. But, you'd probably get called a tool or something by all your brofit pals.

Your hips might be too low at the start of the lift, if you're constantly banging your shins. Just don't hit them; no equipment necessary.

Oh, am I the only one that places my feet such that there is no knurling on the bar where it drags up my legs? I should have a stance an inch or two wider but it seems to work well.

Definitely adjust your form - I keep a few pairs of soccer socks in my locker for the same reason. I've just gotten used to not having hair on the front of my shins...haven't really scraped them up in a long time though.

I use a pretty narrow stance as well.

your shins are going to get banged up to a degree, even in sweats or with socks. It's the nature of the beast. yet, only a few ladies I know ever complain.

here is some more gym equipment for the OP:

If you wear shorts, just wear soccer socks or deadlifting socks. Sweatpants are also another good option. If your shins are still getting torn up after that, then you may want to wear both long socks and sweats.

SBD makes a really nice deadlifting sock, although they're $19/pair. Most of the world class USAPL/IPF powerlifters wear them. I heard Metal makes a decent pair but they're almost $30, not paying over 20 for a pair of socks.

Placing your shins between the knurling seems like the easy solution.

I used to train with a guy who cut up some pop bottles for inserts he placed under his socks.

:p

I had a stupid cut on my right leg for months a while back. It bled all the time all over pants and socks and was super annoying but eventually it went away.. no idea how. Anyway I haven't had actual broken skin since, just loss of leg hair and mild bruises.

Since we are in the mood for bashing what other people do in the gym, let me paraphrase the average bodybuilder's workout

Arrive at Gym
Stare in the mirror - say "I look good!" about 10 times!
Flex a bunch of times - say "I look damn good" a few times
Look at bodybuilder friends - tell them "Hey bro, you look good!'
Lift for a couple minutes (huff, huff, huff . . . damn I'm tired . . . but I'm a BEAST)
Stare in the mirror for a few minutes - "I'm JACKED! Everyone wants to be me. But . . . my pecs aren't quite defined enough"
Lift for a couple minutes more (huff, huff, huff . . .. NEED MORE PROTEIN! ARGH!!!!!!)
Chest bump with partner - We're the mother f'in MEN
Stare in the mirror some more . . . .

Seriously - there is a good argument to be made that bodybuilding is part weightlifting, part male beauty contest, where the audience is other men who are equally (and as secretly) insecure about themselves. I'm surprised more male bodybuilders haven't gotten into wearing makeup.

See? I can be an ass too.

Edit - seriously lay off. Your "crossfit sucks everyone should do what I do" mantra is getting tired.

I wear soccer socks. I also pull sumo which means my legs are purely on the knurling, and since I'm deadlifting correctly, I'm scraping the bar up my leg as I go. I don't get cut. Long socks are all you need (and they're actually required in various powerlifting federations).

What you described there is 'bro'

I work hard in the gym and it shows in how I look. I am not bumping chests with anyone, but I am JACKED..... but more importantly, I am not complaining about my sore shins.

And how I look and what I do in the gym doesn't stem from insecurity. To the newbs/ignorant people, it's easy to make comments like that -> "look at how big that guys muscles are; must be compensating for a little ...."

Muscle talks, Haters gawk

I do what I do for me. to make me feel better and deal with stress. at the same time, if I am putting in a lot of effort, I want it to show physically.

I would argue it is your insecurities that led you in a group environment (crossfit). Weren't secure or confident enough in yourself to do it on your own.
