I have been looking for a quiet low/mid-range card, that doesn't put out too much heat, to replace my 7900GS.

The 9800GT seems like a decent upgrade (the 4830 would be too but there aren't many 4830s out in NZ at the moment).

Not all 9800GT brands/models are available here. I can buy an XFX, Asus, Gigabyte and Palit cards here most easily.

A friend has a Palit 9800GT though and it is pretty loud.

Is anyone able to suggest a 9800GT model that wouldn't be any louder than a 7900GS?

Well, I know most XFX cards tend to be loud from my personal experience. My BFG card isnt too loud but it is still audible. Asus cards with the zalman coolers I have heard positive things about though.

Just try to find one that uses a 4-pin PWM fan, watch out for cards that have a 4-pin connector but only 2 wires.

BFG just came out with two new limited edition models of the 9800 GT, now available at Newegg. The OC2 and OCX have factory overclocks and have a non-reference heatsink that is very effective and quiet. The only thing better (and still reasonably priced) would be to install your own Arctic Cooling Accelero S1. A couple things of note: Only a small production run, don't know if any more will be made after these sell out. PCB is a hair longer than other 9800 GT, so keep that in mind if you have a small case. The card is a two slot solution. PCB is a nice dark color (almost black). It is a "true" 9800 GT in that it supports SPDIF over HDMI, however it lacks HybridPower support which the BFG 9800 GT and 9800 GT OC cards have. Not a big deal since I don't think anyone uses that feature. Oh yeah, these cards have a 55nm G92 GPU, which may be of interest to some.

Disclaimer: I work for BFG.

Thanks Zap, unfortunately I don't think there is a BFG retailer in my country (New Zealand) :(

Thanks all, I took an about turn and ended up buying an HIS 4830 as it was cheap and looks to be as fast as a 9800GT

Cheers
