Feb 2012 i would like to take my wife to SF for a weekend getaway. we have never been to SF and we enjoy going to new places. I have been looking at all the travel sites and there are A lot of hotels. I have looked at trip advisory and you get a hodgepodge of responses from "its a gem" (who the fucks writes that shit anyway) to its a bed bug infested hovel.

so im asking the ATOT folks for hotel recommendations. 4-5 star only please.

Have stayed at the Huntington on Nob Hill several times. Rooms are nice, some have great views of the city (ask!), restaurant has good food but so-so atmosphere. Like all the Nob Hill hotels, it is within walking distance of many good restaurants, including those in the Fairmont and Mark Hopkins. Cable car nearby, plenty of cab service.

If you're thinking a touristy/shopping area like Union Square - the Westin St. Francis is a famous old hotel, but stay in a high tower room for the views. A few blocks away from that is the Fairmont, and even further away is the Mandarin Oriental. I'd say that the Fairmont and Mandarin Oriental are both nicer than the Westin St. Francis.

humm never done a B&B but this looks interesting.

It's a lot more intimate and friendly than the usual hotel. Wife and I stayed there for an anniversary trip, worked well for that, my wife loved it. You can walk to chinatown and north beach pretty easily, tons of places to eat nearby.
