Looking for a new TV, any advice? I'm thinking DLP.

I plan on getting a new TV SOON and I'm just not sure about Plasma and LCD because of burn in concerns. I'va looked at quite a few models and I like the DLP tv's. Nice bright picture and reasonable cost.

Any pros/cons that I should look for? Any pros/cons on plasma or LCD I might have overlooked? I've read so many online buying guides for all three types of TV's that my head is spinning and I can't make up my mind.

I love plasmas. The blacks still arn't the highest, but I love how you can see it anywhere and just how clear it is.

I hate any type of projection with a passion. I hate how if I move 2 feet to the left it's dark and funny or at least not as clear and bright.

I'd go plasma. I never had burn in on mine yet, and I play a lot of video games

yeah, I'm aware of the pitfalls of DLP and i'd rather put up with those vs. the risk of screen burn. My wife loves to watch the online music channels all day every day so there is a REALLY good chance of burn in IMHO.

If anyone has a recommendation, let me see a link!

I'd prefer a 50" or less, moreso a 42-46" as I don't want a big TV.

I only bought our 32" LCD because it was cheap ($809).

If it weren't for that, I'd buy a 46" Toshiba or Samsung DLP.

Advanced Search "DLP" for a bunch of threads.

The hottest deal right now is probably the Samsung 720p 50" set (HLR-xxx-67) for $1,799 shipped from Amazon.

If you don't mind spending another $1,200 you can get the Samsun 1080p 50" set (HLR-xxx-8) for $2,999 shipped from Crutchfield.

My brother has had the Samsun 61" 1080p set for 4-5 months now and is very happy with it.

Mine's a 50". I've had it for 2 years. They were over 3k when I bought it, but you can find them all day long for under 2500 now, and they have been updated several times since mine was new...whether there's any real difference in those updates, I don't know. They all look so good that you'd have to literally put them side by side to see any difference.

I've been eyeballing the Samsung DLP's at Circuit City and Best Buy but most places don't have a good selection of DLP sets. Almost everything is plasma or LCD which I really don't want. What about the 3LCD Wega sets? Are they succeptible to screen burn?

The Sony A10 series LCD RPTV is a good choice too if you decide 50" is just too big, but the cost of a 42" Sony is about the same as a 50" sammy.

Picture quality on the Sony A10 is good, though most say not as good as the Samsung DLPs. Niether technology has any chance of burn-in.

If you're going to sit at least 7' away the 50" is really not too big, but you should find a 50" and try this yourself.

I would either wait for an LED DLP, or get some of the current-gen DLPs at clearance. I know Fry's had a 52" Mitsubishi DLP for $1299, which is pretty damn cheap.

Yeah, the problem is I just don't know enough abut the current technology to make an informed decision and there are too many fricken options that it just makes buying a nice set confusing.

I'm guessing by the comments that the Wega 3LCD sets are a good choice as well?

Burn in can be protected against. I wouldn't consider LCD at this point. If you can afford the new sony technology I hear that is really excellent. Otherwise it depends on your budget and how much space you want to dedicate. DLP is smaller than it used to be but still quite large.

Samsung's new models are due out in April, so I'd wait.

What will the new models have that is worth waiting for? Or do you mean that he should get an old model then when they drop in price?

With my wife in control of the remote most days when I'm not home, HA! 😉 😀

+1

My main fear with LCD and Plasma is burn in and usage life. I don't really care about the physical size of the DLP set so a thin LCD/Plasma has no favor points there. If we can't decide on a certain DLP model I'll probably just end up getting an older style flat tube tv for low cost and call it done. That way I don't have to worry about burn in, just service life as they don't make TV's like they used to. 🙁

If you go rear-projection (either LCD or DLP) be aware that the optimal viewing angle is much less than the advertised viewing angle.

Anthing more than 30 degrees off center and you will begin to lose contrast.

Also, you have to factor in the cost of replacing of replacing a bulb-- they last anywhere from 1000 hours to 5000 hours. The new LED backlit DLPs by Samsung claim to last 20,000 hours.

Some older DLPs have a color wheel... which equals noise and is a possible maintenance item.

Still, DLP rear-projection gives you perhaps the best bang for the buck in terms of price, screen size, and PQ.

Both.😀 The older models will have to come down in price, but the new features, at least to me, are worth waiting for. Here's the breakdown of the new models.

87 Series --- Scheduled for April 2006
HL-S6187W 61" 1080p $3599
HL-S5687W 56" 1080p $3199
HL-S5087W 50" 1080p $2899

78 Series --- Scheduled for June 2006
HL-S7178W 71" 1080p $????
HL-S6178W 61" 1080p $????
HL-S5678W 56" 1080p $????
HL-S5078W 50" 1080p $????

79 Series LED --- Scheduled for May 2006
HL-S5679W 56" 1080p $4199

HL-S5679W is a 1080p model that replaces the current UHP bulb with a high-powered LED light source. The new LED has a 20,000 lifespan. It is said that this will take care of rainbows, so I'm waiting for it.

The rest of the new 1080p models have the new game mode, 10000:1 contrast, the latest 7th generation DLP chip from TI, and 2 HDMI inputs. Unlike the older models, the HDMI inputs will take a 1080p source. The 86 series will have a 5 segment color wheel.

There are also new 720p models, but I wasn't looking at those, but you can find out about them too in the link below.

You can get more specs here.

If you want to go down on screen size a bit and don't care about weight you could try the sony 34" xbr crt, it is supposed to have one of the best pictures of any hdtv.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll look into that as well!

I know the viewing angle isn't the best on DLP's but it's just me and the wife so we'll survive. As i said, screen burn is my #1 fear and that basically rules out Plasma and LCD unless someone can make a suggestion otherwise.

Screen burn-in is an absolute non-issue with LCDs.

With plasmas, it is an issue but a much over-hyped one. The newers plasmas are as resistant to burn-in as your average CRT-- so if you never had fears watching the music channels on your standard tube TV you should have no worries with a plasma.
