Currently using an outdated version of McAfee SpamKiller that I'm not crazy about and I believe our license is about up, so I'm looking at other options. What do you recommend?

You may get more responses in Networking, moving thread there. Oak-Security Mod

Have you thought about a service like MessageLabs?

Here we use GFI Mail Essentials (about 40 users) it works pretty well once you get it tuned properly.

I'd rather have software that's local as opposed to service. I'll look into GFI.

www.postini.com

recently bought by google...

if you have 200 user and if 1 person ask you to find a "spam" that got flagged, etc.. or retune the rules. This will take more than the standard 5 min.. and if you multiple that by 200 a day.. you'll pull your hair out

your rules are not as good as a service providers rules... do you really wanna deal with 200 users a day just on spam ?

postini gives you the ability to block people globally or on individual basis.. ie your spam may not be someone else's spam..

since spam are filter at the postini sites, you have less junk hitting your server, less bandwidth wasted

if someone has spam, just fwd it to spam@postini.com and they'll review the header and update it... i been through 2 hedgefund that uses postini and it has been great... its very easy to use and the users love it.

I tried most of the software, if you break it down by cost, its not worth the time you spend on it..

postini was charing me 3/user / month.. 36 bucks a year a user..

Take a look at Barracuda. For your size, you can get a box for around 2K or so. Set up is easy and IMO more effective than the McAfee stuff which I have also used.

We have a Barracuda Spam Firewall 400 and love it! It really allows us to filter out a lot of the spam plus it reduces the load on the Exchange server at the same time.

Also check out IronPort (recently aquired by Cisco). We use one internally and a number of our customers use it as well and have had good results.

Our company (consultants) uses Barracudas at several clients sites and we have been happy with the results and so have the clients.
