Looking for a new place to rent (DC Area)

Also checking out craigslist, apartment.com. Do you guys use any other good resources to find places? I was thinking about scouring local newspaper websites such as the Washington Post but not sure if they would be too much help.

Update:
Found a place in Springfield off Craigslist! I was on top of monitoring Craigslist and got first crack at a basement apt of a very expensive home (around 2-3 million for a new house like this). I was slightly taken aback when I pulled up, like wtfbbq! It has: master bedroom w/bathroom, then a long hallway into a full kitchen with full fridge, my own washer/dryer, a living room, a private entrance w/ additional parking on the street, and all utils (including internet) for $700/month. Total SQ Footage is probably around 1000. This could be deal of the century!

Make sure and check aptratings.com before you rent too. The sites you listed are pretty much the same ones I checked when looking for an apartment. Also check out apartmentguide.com

gl!

I've found every apartment I've ever lived in through either looking in local newspapers or driving around and looking for "for rent" signs.

When I moved out to DC, I ended up finding my apartment on rent.com. If you use that in conjunction with apartmentratings.com, you'll be in pretty good shape! Craigslist is a great too as well - that's how I found somebody to take over the 2nd year of my lease.

I found out after the fact that there are services out there who'll help find apartments for you as well - it doesn't cost a thing to use them and I regret not finding out about them sooner.

Let me see if I still have some info on them in my archived email.

EDIT: FOUND IT!

Where in DC? DC is a big city (at least compared to other American cities, tiny compared to Istanbul, LOL) so it's better to trim your search to a certain area. Are you going to be working or studying in DC? I recommend Craigslist as that is where I found my apartment, furniture, electronics, car, etc 😛 Also where would your work/school be?

My preferred places are on the southern part of the beltway over to the Wilson Bridge (I don't want to live in MD!), preferably Alexandria/Springfield/Annandale/SW part of the beltway (Burke). I work fulltime in Suitland MD (gov contractor) and will be starting my master's at George Mason (night class) soon so that's why I think the Alexandria area would a great medium for commute times. Not too keen on living in Fairfax because of the inflated prices due to school system (great) since I don't have kids. Other places I'm also checking out are the Ballston/Clarendon/Adams Morgan/Georgetown areas. Even though they're pricier I think the nightlife/atmosphere makes up for the extra 300-400 a month in rent. All in all, I would prefer to live with a roommate since it's cheaper and I'm pretty easygoing.

I'm checking out Craigslist and have a few leads there. I can move out whenever I want to, I was hoping to finalize something for a June 1st move in (figure a month of research/interviews should suffice). 🙂

That apartmentseach.com engine is pretty nifty, thanks! It found some rentals that rent.com missed.

Anyone ever tried roommates.com?

If you are going to work in Suitland and go to school at GM, Alexandria would be smarter for commuting. Are you really going to have time for Georgetown atmosphere? Sounds like you are gonna be pretty busy, even on weekends... I lived near Georgetown (on 25th & M, above Trader Joe's) for a while and it's definitely great to be so close to everything but if you are not going to be able to take advantage of it to the fullest, you'll be overpaying for nothing.

If you have a good income level I'd also recommend Bethesda, MD area. Very close to Georgetown, nice area, shops, closer to Suitland (i assume), etc.

You really need to settle on an area before looking into specific apartments =)

Why?

I found my place in DC off of Craigslist. The Washington Post had some decent deals too when I was looking.

Edit: Once I sort of narrowed down the area I wanted to live in, there was one or two local companies that had a free e-mail list you could sign up for and they would send out the current list of available apartments every day. The good stuff gets snapped up pretty fast since it's such an expensive city to rent in, so I found that helpful since you knew about what was available as soon as it went on the market.

Yarmouth Management was one of them, I think. They're really only for the Capitol Hill area though, not really what you're looking for.

I'm doing the same, though I have settled on something within 2 miles from where I work in Roslynn, so I don't have very many options to sift through.
