ok this is what im lookin for.....

- a smartphone/pda that will work with AT&T.
- id like to have windows mobile or something like it.
- i do not want an iphone.
- must have WI-FI because i dont want to pay 30 bucks for internet usage and most of the places i am have Wi-Fi available.

right now im looking at the Tilt for 200 dollars refurbished.
id consider the pantech duo but it has no wi-fi, is there any other way to connect to the net for free?

also this is kind of off topic but i went down to cingular today and the douchebag there was trying to tell me that even to use wi-fi i need to sign up for the PDA plan for 30 bucks a month...... this is ridiculous, if wifi is offerd on the phone they cant charge me to use it. please someone tell me they cant do this lol

I think "buy.com" is just for new customers. I would guess that it won't work... but I might be wrong.

You shouldn't need a special account to use WiFi - I can't even think how they would enforce this...

For phones with WiFi, I'd go here:
http://www.gsmarena.com/search.php3

and choose GSM850 (which is AT&T) and "WLAN: Required" and "Availability: Available".

The Tilt is a nice choice though.

I am looking for a phone with pretty much the same specs as you. Here's my thread from a couple weeks ago
http://forums.anandtech.com/me...id=66&threadid=2162825

I looked at the nokia N80- but decided it was too slow and old, then the Tmobile Shadow- but it has horrible battery life.
Most of the other phones I looked at were way too expensive. I looked at the tilt and see it going for ~$500 on ebay. Where are you getting it for $200 refurbished? Is that with a new contract?

actually its 150 refurbished if your renewing your contract on ATT.com

ive decided to go with the blackberry 8820 (for 130 refurb) just because it has everything id actually use and it doesnt have all of the problems that ive been hearing about the tilt.

the video drivers on the tilt dont work correctly and they are trying to file a class action lawsuit if HTC doesn't fix it. It seems like new drivers will never come out. Also ive seen the tilt and it is very bulky, the blackberry is maybe the same size but much lighter.
The keys look like theyre in akward places and i haerd just to make a call is a pain in the ass. I like to call someone as quick as possible without any loading or going through menus and shit like that so i just decided to go with the blackberry.

It was really a toss up but i guess worst case scenario is i dont like it and send it back and get the tilt

heres the site for the law suit: www.htcclassaction.org

OR the black berry 8820 or 8120?

Opinions needed!

Well, they have WiFi. The 8820 has a bigger screen, if browsing is you main pursuit. The 8120 has a regular (3.5mm) headphone jack and mSDHC card support for PMP functionality, too.

The PDA functionality is comprehensive and the same for both models.

I love my Tilt. It really is a amazing device.
You should be able to sign up for the MediaNet for $19.99 or a there is another unlimited internet for 14.99. Go to howardforums. and read up. 3g is amazingly fast!
And Consider paying $249.00 for a new one.
Best of Luck!

how is the battery life on the tilt? a friend of mine had it and returned it because it didnt last long and plus the video driver is messed up so it went kinda slow.......

im still undecided which to go with the tilt or the 8820.

does the blackberry have 3rd party apps that you can download? as many as the tilt?

does anyone have a guess when the drivers will come out for the tilt?

and this questions is really out there: do u think that the tilt will ever be able to run ubuntu mobile? (i know its still in development and only works on a few phones but is there a chance?

I  my Nokia E61
It comes unlocked and it's a quadband phone. I use it with my T-mobile account. I pay $6 for my unlimited EGPRS internet and I couldn't have been any happier.

This is by far the MOST bang for the buck phone I have had. IT came handy to me about a bazillion times.

I got it for $250 on Ebay about a year and a half ago, it was a real catch :)

You might want to look at the E61i if a camera and the newer looks matter to you (oh and US 3G).
However, do not confuse the E61 with the Cingular E62. The E62 is the no wifi version made for cingular (can be unlocked though)

I am a CSE and I do have the need for my cellphone-pda to be able to do A LOT. I sometimes even administer my Linux servers through it hehe, the CTRL key on the keypad is just UNIQUE!

And so far, I have yet to be disappointed by this piece of work. Typing on it with two thumbs is a breeze and it's capabilities are outstanding! Fvck windows mobile, this tops it off big time :D

Tons of 3rd party apps for the BlackBerry. Check out www.pinstack.com or other places like that.

I think the Tilt would be a good fit. IIRC, the Blackberry requires an extra monthly fee, right?

My wife has a Mogul, which is a close relative of the Tilt. She loves it.

I really like Nokia E61. It also has the function of SIP calls which can be connected to any VOIP service providers and you can then make calls through WiFi connectivity or the phone network. Even though it doesn't have a camera, I wouldn't think it is necessary. There's a Nokia E61i though, with 2MP camera but without flash.
