If you don't mind a bit of dated graphics and turn-based strategy, Lords Of The Realms 2 is a fun medieval game. In what's sort of a King-mode, everything is turn-based, where you tax the serfs, haul your resources, and take land. But in combat, it becomes real-time quite similar to Age Of Empires 2. You can download it for free as well (it's abandonware) off of the Home of the Underdogs, but it may not run on Windows XP. It's defenitely worth a try though.

Rise of Nations and Rise of Nations Thrones and Patriots. Also consider Warhammer, Dawn of War and Homeworld 2

I've been playing the heck out of LotR: Battle for Middle Earth. If you hack it, to raise the pop cap, it's more like the movie. The screen is packed full of guys.

i enjoyed it at first, but the terrible way they limited your pov makes any real management of a large force a pure pain in the ass. its doable...just a pain in the ass; which took the fun out of it for me :/

i need to try rome

What do you mean by limiting your point of view? In games like Starcraftand Wrcraft, you can only grab a few guys at once. And the screen is zoomed really close. With BFME, it's zoomed out far enough so you can control hundreds apon hundreds of units at once. Maybe you just sucked at it.

You mentioned KOTOR 2 - i don't know if it's because it's buggy or because you don't like RPGs. If it's because you don't like RPGs, then ignore this, but...

If you don't mind dated graphics and turn based play, Fallout and or Fallout 2 are about the best games i have ever played! G'luck in your search

A little more info would be nice. Are you into RPGs, FPSs, Sims, MMOs, MMORPGs, or what? I can handle the first two, but beyond that youre on your own. Whats your problem with KOTOR2. I plan on picking that up, along with Riddick.

Age of Mythology is basically the next installment in the Age of . . . series. Have you played that? And I think it has an expansion pack out too.

[edit] Oh, and I'm amazed nobody has said it yet but, WARCRAFT III! It's pretty awesome and has an expansion pack named "The Frozen Throne."

I'll second Rise of Nations as quite entertaining if you're looking for RTS.

Iron Storm is a good FPS that's out for $9.99 in jewelcase edition now. Good graphics and sound, challenging single player campaign. It's a bit steep on the learning curve, so if you're not big on FPS you might pass on this.

Unreal Tournament 2K4 is probably the greatest video game ever made. There are so many official free downloads and different game modes and styles of multiplayer and singleplayer games that I don't know how you can ever get sick of it.

EVE Online is a very cool MMO and you can download the client for free and play for two weeks at no charge. It's as much an economic sim as it is a space roleplaying game, but it's pretty deep if you have the patience for it.

If nothing else appeals to you, you can buy a GameCube and a copy of Resident Evil 4 for about $150. That's going to be a lot more fun than a year's subscription to Lineage II! :p

Happy hunting

Battle for middle earth is pretty sweet but be prepared for some annoying bugs that have not been fixed yet. They say a patch is on the horizon so hopefully that will fix them.

Do you mean a "shallow" learning curve? A steep learning curve would mean that you learn alot in a short amout of time. A shallow learning curve would mean that its difficult to learn the game mechanics and as such it takes you much longer to learn how to play the game. If this is confusing, learning curves are plotted with learning shown as a function of time. Learning is plotted on the ordinate and time on the abscissa. Not a hijack here, just a point of clarification.

What bugs? Don't think I've encountered any yet.
