Looking for a new game

I haven't had any new games in a while and frankly I don't know where to begin to look. The last game I bought was Quake III. I enjoy playing it, but I miss the single player aspect that Quake I/II had. I've downloaded UT2003 demo and it's cool and all but not exactly what I'm looking for. I'm looking for something like the original Doom. Where you got to run around and kill odd monsters with things like a chainsaw. Something first person, gorey, eery, fast paced, and has great graphics. Something like Quake III, only more violent/gruesome. Doom III looks like a perfect candidate but it's not due out till fall??? Any games been banned in any countries lately?

Neverwinter Nights? Although an AWESOME game which I personally LOVED.. it's NOTHING like Quake :)

Honestly tho, I really can't think of any great first person shooters that have come out recently. I loved Deux Ex but it's more an RPG/FPS hybrid. Max Payne was good, though 3rd person.. Hmm.. Unreal 2 came out recently but is TERRIBLE IMHO. Hmm.. I'll edit this post when I think of one :p

Max Payne is excellent.

Serious Sam 1 & 2 are probably the closest resemblance to DOOM.

You might try playing through the original DOOMs again with doomsday, or tenebrae (quake) with updated graphics.

Strictly from a violent point of view, Soldier of Fortune 2 is pretty gruesome and has a pretty good SP campaign and great MP. Good game whether or not you care about violence though.

If you own halflife, I seriously recommend the Free Mod "Natural Selection"

It's the most unique mod I've ever played - it's part FPS and part RTS. Nasty aliens with all kinds off interesting attacks, Marines with all sorts of kool weapons (and a console menu view of the battlefield for the commander), with teammwork being the key

=)

If you're just looking to run around and randomly kill a lot (and I mean a lot!) of monster then Serious Sam and Serious Sam second edition are what you want.

Really fun mindless shooting games :).-

Well I downloaded Postal 2, and it was pretty fun. It definately has the gore and coolness factors that I was looking for. I'm definately going to buy it but it still isn't quite the kind of game I was looking for. I was looking for something a little more eerie like upcoming Doom III. I guess I'll have to give Serious Sam and Serious Sam II a look-see when I get home. Thanks for the suggestions guys! I was just getting a little board of the recent rash of war/covert ops type games that have flooded the market. Ever since CounterStrike came out, it seems like everyone jumped on that bandwagon and abondoned everything else.
