Can't believe it's so hard to find a firewall, you'd think there would be a million out there. Really hard to find a decent one though, or one that likes me at all enough to work right :p

I linked to a firewall in my previous post. Please try it out before saying it's hard to find one. You may be pleasantly surprised with its functionality. :p

When testing games without the firewall on (tried this with ZA too) i didn't have the lagging problems. Probably related to my router not liking those firewalls or something, my router doesn't get along with a lot of stuff. Didn't have the lagging in games with Kerio 2.15 either.

I agree, Sygate is the shizzle.

Sadly, and I don't mean to offend, if you're having problems with Sygate, it's definitely you, and not Sygate, that's to blame here. Could be your system settings or something, but Sygate is idiot-proof right out of the box.

I tried Comodo and would recommend avoiding it. It's not as free as free can be since a license must be aquired (no beeg deal); they want to push news updates to you -kinda sad when the firewall has to be used to block communication with the developer (bigger deal); they want to sell you on other apps as expected but one way they do that is having an otherwise superfluous tray application to navigate to the firewall app and any others installed so not only does it use more memory but it is decidely unergonomic; the same could be said for the firewall GUI itself as although it sure is purty the navigation could be simplified.

While the depth of protection seems good it keeps asking about the same apps even after a rule is created. Maybe that is reduced with some of the "dumbed down" options but even so it wouldn't be an excuse. If the tray app is disabled from loading then the firewall can be accessed directly but it will not minimize to the tray -presumably a third-party program could be used to do that if you wanted.

The big killer is that it uses up to 80MB RAM which is patently absurd. Finally, when it comes time to uninstall it does not do a thorough job and leaves behind at least one 'non plug-n-play' driver entry as well as some folders.

In short, Comodo belongs in the commode (toilet).

I plan on trying Jetico and perhaps Sygate but for now I am sticking with Kerio 2.1.x.

FYI the reason for straying after several years was likewise a sudden crop of BSOD's. Kerio was definitely the culprit... not sure why... tried completely uninstalling and installing again... I can only presume some Windows update or perhaps Bluetoof installation were responsible. Previously, I had a minor problem with Kerio buffer overflows when running simultaneous work units of World Community Grid however that was fixable by increasing it in the registry.

So, I have reverted from 2.1.5 to 2.1.4 and so far so good.

Just recently get a copy of Kaspersky Internet security given to me to test & so far I've been very impressed with the "anti-hacker" firewall component of the package (obviously the AV rocks) ... light on resources & as far as I can tell very effective, Zonealarm security suite was pretty good too until their last version update which really screwed things up.

Happy news. But how about some hard facts on RAM useage from Task Manager?
