Looking for a new desk...what do you guys think of this one?

My wife and I are building a new home and I am in need of a new computer / office desk...

I was hoping for a U or L shaped desk for maximum space...

found this one which looks pretty nice and fits the budget

Thoughts? I am a little leery of buying a desk sight unseen...however the ones I have seen in furniture stores and other places are not tripping my trigger.

The room is about 12 x 11 and it will only be used for an office.

I don't like enclosed desks either (L all the way), and a desk is definitely something I would have to see in person. Especially a $1000 one.

I had wanted to get an L-shaped desk (similar to the cheap one I have now) but the wife thinks it would be ugly / dumb / annoying to have your back to the door all the time which led me to a possible U-shaped desk where you could be facing the door.

I would obviously like to get one from a local store if I could find one that doesn't look terrible but all the furniture stores I have found just suck for lack of a better term and are about the same price.

Can I ask why you don't like enclosed desks? I hadn't thought too much about being enclosed...my initial reaction was what is the big deal...once you sit down you aren't moving around...

I tend to like the open space - I have a graphics tablet that I use from time to time which requires more mobility. I like to sit back somewhat and look at things....

I don't see why you can't have an L-shaped desk facing a door. Just instead of sticking it in the corner of a room, flip it so that you are looking at the door when seated behind it.

My biggest gripe about "wooden" desks that you find at most stores these days is that they're all the same old junk - fiberboard with a laminate on top. Eventually the laminate will chip or peel off, leaving you with ugly, crumbling fiberboard beneath. Trust me, it happened to my (fairly cheap) $300 Sauder desk from Staples after about 3 years of use, and it will happen to my boss's $1200 Raymour & Flanigan desk in time.

I recently bought a tempered glass and metal desk for about $150-200ish that I'm super happy with. It's extremely solid, has plenty of room, and looks great regardless of other furniture. Best of all, no fiberboard. Look at a company called Z-Line designs. Here's one similar to what I have: http://www.amazon.com/Z-Line-Belaire.../dp/B00166HC9E, and here's another one that's currently super cheap, at least in silver: http://www.amazon.com/Walker-Edison-3-Piece-Contemporary-Glass/dp/B00166HC9E

Of course, I would take a solid wooden desk over glass any day (less fingerprints to wipe off), but solid wood is probably either going to be pine (which won't hold much weight wise), or $2000+.

I don't know if I could do a glass / metal desk...but thanks for the links...I will keep looking for L-Shaped desks...

I like the U shaped desk for the amount of space it provided...

I like the U-shaped desks...and I'm at one right now. That one LOOKS OK, but IME, the Bush desks are at best, vinyl-wrapped particle board. NOT very high quality construction.
They're the typical Office Depot/Staples stuff.

I was finding the same asssement of that brand 'bush'

I did find another desk that isn't as flashy and seems to be a higher grade of construction for a lot cheaper...

This would be a similar image of the real thing I think...

Not bad looking. It appears from a quick googling that the HON desk is also "laminate finish."
That doesn't necessarily mean it's junk...just not high quality construction. Many people use them for years.
My POS desk came from Costco almost 15 years ago. It's oak veneer over particle board. Again, the the highest quality, but it's served me well.

I HIGHLY recommend getting out and looking at the ones you're considering before you order.

believe me I have tried...I cannot find a B&M store that sells a desk configuration or appearance similar to a desk like this anywhere....

The desks I have seen in B&M stores are the typical oak looking desks that are not what I am looking for honestly...

I will keep looking and that was the reason I started asking on ATOT was for feedback honestly because I am rolling snake eyes at the moment!

sounds like something they sell to companies which have buying departments that don't give a sh*t about cost, that is 1k?
style is poor, and the build looks like ikea but probably worse. if that were like 1/2 the price it would still be a but over priced.

i have one and love it, its not perfect, but my dad gave it to me. i just wish it had an extra drawer and that the keyboard tray had a little more vertical room

Check out Sam's Club. I grabbed my desk from there.

It's an "L" shape that's solid wood and has made it through three moves. Sturdy as shit. I think I paid $700 for it and $200 for an extra matching file cabinet. You could buy a hutch for around $250.

Your room is gorgeous.

Is the desk actual solid wood though, or particle board with a laminate finish? If it is actually solid wood, even pine, that's a helluva deal for $700.

Nope, it's an actual solid wood...poplar I'm guessing with a very nice dark cherry(almost walnut) veneer. Drawers are all tongue and groove wood too.

When I can get access to my stepdads wood shop again... I think a building a new desk will be the first thing I do. It will be real wood and solid. Most likely L shape.

Wow, I use that exact one in my office at work! I love mine. There is so much room, you're not really enclosed in it.

This desk has been in service here for a very long time and it is still top quality.
