Looking for a new career, not sure what

I work for a small company doing technical support where I have been for 3.5 years. I've really started to hate my job. I'm getting tired of doing technical support, and it is making it hard to get up and get to work every day. Yesterday my supervisor and the company owner wanted to meet with me. Basically they wanted to tell me they knew I was frustrated with my job, and they understood. The company owner did technical support for a long time, and said he knew how tough it was, and didn't know how I was still doing it.

Anyway. they said they realize I want to move on, but that the company is so small, there isn't much room here. Since we're friends in addition to be boss/employee, they want to help. They don't want me to go, because they depend on me for A LOT, but they realize how unhappy I am. Basically they feel if I want to move on, they'll help me, as long as I'm willing to transfer my knowledge to someone new. They've offered to hook me up with contacts, help me find a new job, even have me bring in my resume and have my supervisor and another lady help me work on it on company time. They've given me no timetable for this, and have offered a lot of support, as long as I keep up my end (doing my job still, transferring knowledge). They've even offered to let me contract here if I do leave but still need extra money while my new career takes off.

The problem is, I have no idea want I want to do. I have a BS in Business with a Concentration in MIS, but I'm not so sure IT is the place to be, so I'm tempted to switch fields. I'm open to ideas (serious ideas please) to help me move in a direction. I just want a stable career that I can make decent money at, and not constantly worry about job security like I do in IT. Any ideas? (btw, I've already considered porn star, but my GF doesn't approve)

well it seems you dont realy have to worry about job security with excelent bosses like you have

but what are you looking for in a job? a challange? confort? strain on mind or body?

Real Estate, banking, homebuilding, carpentry, contracting, tractor trailer driving, hell I could go on for a while.

join the club.
its about time for me to move on, as well.
im half tempted to go live with my parents and just deliver pizzas or something just to get out of this godforsaken town and office.
i would make about the same amount of money too, working full time as a pizza delivery driver.
pathetic.

I job that challenges and interests me would be great. Tech support is so tedious, boring, and monotonous .

I find that bad work is still good if you work with good people. Heck, I used to deliver pizza, and I loved it simply because I'd meet so many weird and wonderful characters.

What about mortgage broker, anyone have any experience there? Real estate appraiser is also an option. What about that?

Most jobs are. I'm working in a 2 man company doing sales and operation, where I basically do everything. If I make any single mistake my partner will get on my ass the whole week. So at least your bosses are nice, and I find that extremely important.

If you're looking for a dynamic job, sales might be a good start. When you have to deal with people, nothing really remain the same. :) There are a lot of messed up and unreasonable people around though so job might still get frustrated.

I think Design for magazine is also good. You got to learn a lot about layout and such and talk to people in whatever industry the magazine's in.

I really think your job right now is good that your boss appreciate what you're doing. not a lot of supervisor do that nowadays.

Just my 2 cents.

I'd love to have a career in design for a magazine, computer animation, etc, but I have no artistic or creative skills at all. It sounds like a fun career, but I don't think I could be successul at it.

I'd like to at least make what I make now, which is around 45K. I would always be great to make more though!

You could go back to school for something else...maybe accounting? It is stable but boring.

We can make all the suggestions in the world, but if it isn't something you really like doing, you will get bored of it and end up hating it just as much as your current job.

A stable career that you can make good money at and not worry about job security: Accountant.
I have a friend who hasn't even gotten his CPA yet and is making 100k a year in the L.A. area.
Of course the fact that he is living and sleeping with his boss helped the negotiations a little.

By the way, he hates his job and wishes he had done something different. He said it is incredibly boring. But he's pretty content to just hate work and enjoy his money on his days off.

I'm a real estate appraiser. Licensed in New York.
Any questions, shoot me a PM. OR post em here.

I would say that since you are going to start a whole new career, salary expections should be a lower priority.
