MTB?!?!

Try Craig List in your location or areas close to location. I've seen Speacialized Hard Rock in your price range for my area.

What kind of riding are you going to do? Just street, then you would need to put slicks on it, if not get city or hybrid bike.

Also, it doesn't matter how cheap the bike looks etc, people will still Huffys to Speacialized S-Works bikes if left outside.

I'm partial to the Trek bikes. I have a hybrid model, it's not 5-6lbs but it's pretty light. If you want a 5-6lb bike you're talking probably $700+
Edit: Get a Kryptonite New York lock if you want to keep your bike from being stolen.

Get a city bike, I think Jehovah on ATOT just got Trek 100. You can PM him about it. It goes for 309 retail which means cheaper at the bike store, there is Trek 50 for $229. Don't forget you're going to need to get helmet, maybe basket for books, etc.

5-6lbs. I think anything under 40lbs is more realistic

With a mountain bike, you're going to add the cost of slicks etc.
