I basically have 2 options for lunch, grab quick crap, or eat nothing.

Off and on I have been getting powerbars by the case (12 bars), the 90g bar with 30g protein, I eat half on the way to work and the other half at lunch time.

This isnt really the best choice in bars for my purpose but it seems to be better than either alternative.

While looking for the best price on my favorite bar this evening I saw some comments that this bar is a bad choice for a meal replacement and I suppose that would be what I have been using it for.

What would be a better option? the 90g bar used as i described kept me satisfied through the day, and I can usually get them for about $2.00/ea

There is never really a total concensus on the "best" meal replacement bar, with inevitablly someone always saying they all suck and avoid at all costs, blah blah blah. But I swear by the VPX Zero Impact bars. I find them delicious (pumpkin or coconut the best), filling, and a really good nutritional profile. Normal price is about $2/bar when bought in a case of 12. But you can frequently find them on sale. When I do, I stock up. Actually, looks like right now they have a buy 3 boxes, get 1 free promotion going, which brings it down to like $19/box.

I like these but I'm under no illusions that they are that good for me. Pretty high in carbs, and lots of processed stuff, but they do taste good.

Quite honestly I love most of the Met-RX Big 100 bars and I can usually get them at Kroger or HEB from $1.50 to 1.87. Some of the bars do, however, include small amounts of rice flour and HFCS.

I saw some comments about met-rx being a good choice, I hadnt heard of VPX, it has less sugars but similar carbs

The issue with the powerbar I listed looks to be the carbs and sugars, making it an energy bar I guess, the supreme protien had similar amounts, but much more in the way of vitamins and minerals.

I guess I will have to try a few types and see which works for me, thanks for the info.

i eat these occasionally, although more as a between meal snack rather than full on meal replacement:

I personally thought the chocolate ones were gross as hell, but i really like vanilla almond, cinnamon roll and coconut cashew. i tried them after someone here recommended them although i forget who atm.

I too came to mention Quest bars, even though they may not qualify as a full on "meal replacement" bar.

Questbars require either a microwave to heat them up, or jaws of steel. I tried a cinnamon roll straight from the gym, so I was unable to heat it. The taste was great, the texture made it almost un-edible. I'm not kidding when I say by the time I had finished it my jaw was sore from all the chewing. And it wasn't really close to a MRP calorie wise.

MetRX might not have the best protein, and have a lot of sugar, but they taste wonderful. The Supreme Protein are WTF good too, the new chocolate wafer crunch one is freaking delicious. MetRX has a few god aweful ones that are mushy or overly chewy. But I am crazy for the Apple Pie, PB Pretzel & Sweet & Salty. This is one I buy from my local Nutrishop, the owner calls it a "crappy candy bar" but it tastes almost exactly like a Whatchamacallit, I could eat one of these every day. I don't know the brand off hand, but the Nutrishop has these PB chocolate chip cookies OMGOMGOMG good. One pack of those with a bottle of Nesquik would be a superb MRP :D This is the bar I get.

Clif Builder bars are my favorite.

270 cal
8g fat (30%)
30g carbs (40%)
20g protein (30%)

They aren't the best ratio, but they taste great (chocolate).
Some of the bars with better ratios taste like dirt and are very tough to swallow.

For some reason that flavor makes me thirsty like I was eating saltine crackers, it's difficult to even get one bite down without a big gulp of water.

We've been carrying AMRAP Nutrition's paleo bars - $3 a bar and definitely not enough to satisfy 2 meals (or even one), but that said, the nutrition behind it is good and it's all natural ingredients, no filler. I'll have one every now and then if I'm pinched on time. And despite not typically liking the texture of raw coconut, it's not that bad.

OP would you have access to water and ice? I picked up some Muscletech Halo last week. It's probably the most delicious Chocolate protein I've ever had. It's got a blend of Whey proteins and does a great job making me feel full for a good while. It tastes like you're drinking a chocolate cake. They also have Vanilla and I believe Strawberry. There are days I'll have a protein bar, but a shake can be a nice change for a few days here and there.
