Since some or most of people on Anandtech sleep, maybe you guys can help. I just bought a condo, which needed new furniture. So I bought a bedroom set, and am looking for a matress. I have looked at matresses that cost anywhere from $600-$2000. This scares me, because I really like the $2000 one. Other than the $2000 one, they all seem the same to me. I know about looking for coil count and coil guage and stuff. Any other tips? Thanks in advance!

p.s. its for a queen bed, and i will need a box spring.

Try to find a mattress on clearance. I stumbled upon a Simmons Beautyrest World Class Legacy Elite Firm queen mattress at a local furniture store's tent sale for $299 with boxspring. It had some minor cosmetic damage in one of the corners and the boxspring is not a perfect match but you can't often get any kind of queen mattress for $299. It's pretty firm and I'm happy about that; you can turn back and forth and the bed doesn't shake and you don't sink in. It's also one-sided so you never have to flip it.

I looked at those tempurpedic foam matresses. I even found a good price. I guess the only thing i dont like about them is that when you push down with just your hand, it sinks in really far. I would think that this makes "non-sleep" bed activities uncomfortable. I doubt the salesman will allow me to bring a girl in and try that out. :) Maybe someone with one fo those matresses can give me a heads up.

p.s. They are damn comfortable for laying on tho :)

I'd say you'd get used to them... I used to have an eggcrate matress pad that I'd put on my bed for more comfort, but I didn't like the way it reflected my body heat. Foam is weird the way it absorbs heat... I'm curious about those tempurpedic matresses though...how much are they?

My parents bought a sealy mattress for my old room after I moved out at Sams, its an ok mattress. I'm not sure which model it is.

I bought a Denver Mattress a while ago, and now that my body has adjusted to it, I sleep like the DEAD in it. It's sooooo nice. It wasn't cheap (~$350, but it's an extra long twin, which are a little higher) and it was the best model they had in extra-long twin. My parents just bought a King size Denver Mattress pillowtop which apparently they love. I don't know for sure how much they paid, I think around $1000-1200 for it.

I'm happy with my Denver Mattress. I didn't find the sales guy too pushy (he took my "no I don't need the special mattress treatment crap at $30 a bottle" the first time and didn't bug me about it) and I got a nice warranty with it. The one my parents got had a small tear in it apparently, so they sent out a couple guys to get their old one and deliver a new one without too much hassle.

The problem with buying mattresses at sams is they don't usually have them out where you can try them out first. Trying a mattress out first is key.

You bring up a good point with the "non-sleeping bed related activities". I think when I move into a bigger place and buy a bigger bed, I'll point blank the salesguy with "So how's the sex on this mattress?" :D

You need to decide if you want foam or coil, generally the more coils the better. Like another guy said the most important thing is comfort, it can't be to hard or to soft or you'll hate it. Firmness is a personal preference so you gotta try it out.
Personally if I was getting a queen size mattress&boxspring set, I'd choose a coil one about 800 total coils, about six layers, with a pillowtop mattress.

Probably caused by a leaky roof.

I strongly recommend that you check out www.mattresses.net. they have a GREAT selection of mattresses at GREAT prices.

I purchased their top of the line King Size Latex mattress (latex mattresses sleep JUST LIKE tempurpedics) for less than $2000.00 shipped. GREAT PRICES, GREAT QUALITY.

Oh I just saw your post about activities other than sleep.

the latex mattress has been GREAT for my wife and i, cause we have three kids, and latex mattresses are ABSOLUTELY SILENT. no springs, no squeeks NOTHING. and they are comfortable. :)

I layed down on a lot of mattresses yesterday. I still really want the kingsdown one (the one that costs $2000). I think i need to simply find it for a better price. I saw on epinions (thanks robet!) that people have purchased a kingsdown mattress for as little as $1000. I need to find where they bought theirs. Maybe someone has some ideas? :)

I've heard a lot of praise on foam mattresses and people at ePinions.com have recommended aBed.com which is 1/3 cheaper than Brookstone B&M is.

not all foam mattresses are created equally. a brief perusal of the pillow thread in hot deals can give you an idea of the range. I currently have the latex mattress from the site i've linked. the site i've linked has prices that are better than the ebed.com and it is the real thing. real latex. my mattress by itself weighs about 200 lbs. latex mattresses are EXTREMELY heavy, be sure you have someone at home with you to help you move it around.

good luck to all looking for a good mattress. i researched this for a whole month about 4 hrs per day before i bought mine. I know how important a decision this is.

If you don't buy your mattress from Costco or Sam's Club, but do end up buying it from a local mattress reseller, consider the following advice: Treat the mattress salespeople just like you would a used car dealer. Don't pay the price that's marked on their tags. Get them down in price -- We've purchased 4 great mattresses over the past 8 years and never, ever, ever have we paid the posted price. Also, if you do buy locally, head to the store at about 5:00 P.M. on a Sunday - preferably when a football game is on. Sundays like this are usually very, very quiet days in the mattress sales business, so the salespeople will tend to accept some of your "lower-ball" offers. Best of luck! :)
