Looking for a last minute Holidays gift to a Network guy.

How about assembling 250GB NAS for about $200.

First read this: Network Attached Storage (NAS) for Home/SOHO Networks.

Then go to: D-Link Express EtherNetwork Network Storage Adapter, Model DNS-120 ? Retail $52 after rebate

And: QUICK-SERV 3.5" USB 2.0 Hard Disk Drive Enclosure, Model "PENR-35U2" ? $24.50.

And: MAXTOR 7Y250P0 250GB 7200 RPM 8MB HD $129

$52 + $24.50 + $129 = $206.50 + few for shipping.

Have a Nice Holidays every One. :wine:

Works for me.

Or you could just get me a dual-layer DVD burner. Most network guys I know would find many many hours of enjoyment from one of those.

EDIT: Did I say me? Oops...I meant him.

Heck, I just made a post inquiring about a simliar item in the General forum. Would anyone know of a enclosure that could hold 3/4/5 drives and it would be networked, not USB2/firewire, whatever? Still a pretty cool idea Jack.

LOL, Yeah my own allocation for the Holidays was spent last week on one of those.

I actually looked into it for a friend (his wife's gift to him) and when I saw somewhere a thread suggesting an Old Snap server (just few thousands $$$) I decide to try for something better.

Inexpensive Technology in this area is rather new on the market and later in 2005 you will probably will see better more flexible enclosures. As well as straight Windows units instead of the Linux Hybrids.

At the moment that is the best I could conceive that is affordable for Home/SOHO user.

However (as stated above) my own Gift was already ""blown"" on a double layer DVD.:music:

I have been considering something like this, too (for me), but I could get a lot more use and knowledge from one of those SC420 servers from Dell starting @ $229!

For the Money it is a nice little server and Windows 2003 SBS or other version are Great.

But it is defeating the whole purpose of not running a Server Computer, and just having Network Storage Space.

I think that $229 is just the hardware.

Once you get the OS the thing is more like $700 - $1000.
