Looking for a laser printer

I am looking for a good black and white laser printer that has cheap toner and hopefully works with linux and solaris maybe. I am just going to use it to print off text and PCB's.

Any recommendations?

I've always have been a fan of HP laser. You can get something similar to the HP Laserjet 1020 for about $150. You can also use 3rd party toner to save money. I usualy get my HP 1012's toner 3rd party for about $25 vs HP's $70.

My previous printer was an HP Laserjet 4L which lasted me 10 years or so. I have been running my HP Laserjet 1012 for about 3 and a half years so far and it's been a nice little work horse with no problems. I would expect that the 1020 is just as good. HP also has a few other models out there. Some cheaper, some more expensive.

I would be very surprised if Linus and solaris didn't have a propper driver for them and if they didn't you could still use the generic PCL drivers.

Of course, there are other brands like samsung, Dell and Brother but I have never used any of those but there are those that like them.

I don't know if there are any near you at the moment, but CompUSA is still in the process of selling off it's inventory. I was at my local store tonight and saw that they were selling Samsung laser printers for $82. Frankly, that's less expensive than most first party toner cartridges alone.

I have a LaserJet 1018 and I love it. It's a little less expensive than the 1020 because it doesn't have a dedicated print processor and ends up offloading its engine tasks to the CPU but that's no big deal for me since this isn't really a major workgroup printer. Just a few prints from me and my girlfriend now and then and it does the job just great. I'm building a WHS box and will eventually connect it up to that so I don't really have to worry about it much.

At home we are using HP 1012, not complain so far. We've been using for around 3 years or so. It's a good little home printer.

At the office we are still using one of those Laserjet 4P. The thing is practically indestructible. It's been going strong for I don't remember exactly how long but it must be near 15 years.

The early corp. printers from HP were amazing. We have an aincent, yellowed, loud and slow HP LaserJet 4si sitll working like a champ here at our office. Over 1 million pages and it's still going strong. We just threw a new fuser in it for cheap so it should give us a lot more use.

I am beginning to wonder if a lower cost, faster, more energy efficient printer that doesn't need a few minutes of warmup would be a better solution for us in the long run, though. But this thing is indestructible. The more recent desktop lasers HPs sell aren't the same quality and ruggedness, but considering this printer was more than $1,000 new and my 1018 at home cost me $50 after rebate, I'm not too worried about it. 😀

I just got rid of my 6P last year.
It still worked great, but was huge, yellow and thought it was time to retire it.
Almost 10 years was good enough.
I donated it to a neighbor for her kids to print out coloring pages. 🙂

if you want a laser that has duplexing and networking capabilities, check out the brother hl-5250DN; there's a great deal on them for $172 shipped from either amazon or newegg. i think you can refill the toner using refills from ebay, but i have yet to do it myself.

I love my 5250DN. One of the B&M stores had a similiar deal, but may have expired.
