I am aware of the IBM T-Series - the only problem is I *NEED* a serial port on the laptop without the dock. This is for GPS related application development and that serial port is a must. A USB to Serial plug is not enough since that won't pass the requirements of our group.

<--- :( because this rules out the T-Series

the Thinkpad A21m I'm using now has a serial and parallel... maybe it's just the T-series...

A21 is also a very old machine.
You don't have to tell me twice. It's been a year since I was promised a new machine. :| 800MHz for techies while the finance guys get the T42s is just not right.

IBM T Seies>Dell anything.

Although the T series is sadly not an option for the OP.

i just noticed the Serial Port and Parrallel Port in the OP requirements.

tough call dude. it will be hard to find any laptops these days with a Parrallel port.

go for a used one somewhere.

Laptops do exist with paralell ports, you just have to shop around.

Check out Toshiba, since IBM is out of the question. Toshiba is up there in reliability with IBM.

my last two laptops were toshiba's, they were ok but no way i'd say they are in the same class as ibm for reliability. also, all the toshibas i've ever owned or serviced all had really really short battery lifes.

Dells are good for budget machines, but with the OPs budget he should NOT get a Dell.

dude - read the damn post.

Need a serial port without a port replicator. IBM becomes out of question.

Serial port is a must. Can live without the parallel port.
