Ain't this about a b!tch.. I'm moving to an area where I can't get DSL so my current DSL provider said I'll lose my email accounts within hours of my cancellation. So.. Basically, I want to look into getting my own domain so that I can manage my own email accounts, then eventually host my own site.

I looked at GoDaddy and Yahoo! and they sound ok. GoDaddy seems to be a better deal since I'll need at least 4 email accounts. What do you guys think? I'm not looking so much for cost as I am reliability and how long they've been around.

Eventually, I'll also want to host two more sites with them in the future. And no.. I won't be doing any warez hosting.

Oh yeah.. I need php,cgi-bin,etc support

Budget?

Can you afford $5.95/mo if you can host several web sites?

I go with liquid web personally, they are more expesive than most, but I can call anytime and get a real person. I have also never been on hold waiting for thier techs. Cpanel access and a multitude of easy to use tools.

I don't think the mods like referral links, even if you supply non-referral ones.

I actually didn't know Liquid web did shared hosting, but I've had a dedicated server there before. They're a good company.

OP: I would never host anything with GoDaddy. In my mind they are a domain company, and that's about all they should be. There control panel sucks, and there support is also trained to help with domains, not with webhosting. I speak from experience after moving several clients away from them.

I wouldn't host wth Yahoo, because they are a search engine, but again that's a personal opinion. I doubt that they value customers like a hosting company would, as it's not a significant amount of their business.

Ehh.. I'd say under $15 maybe. Pref $9.95.

Zolty, I checked out liquidweb. It seems nice but a little more than what I'd like. If the reviews are good though, I'll go through your referral link. What do you get for referrals?

Edit: PM me your referral link, but edit it out of your post. I don't want this locked.

I don't reccomend godaddy either for hosting, there are many other solutions. Just decide what you want in terms of reliability, customer support, and space

Ok.. I'm a little slow. When they talk about bandwidth, is that usually monthly or yearly?

So far now, I'm looking at godaddy.com, cernax.com, westhost.com and liquidweb.com. They all seem pretty good. It's just funny to me.. I remember when registering a domain was like $150 a year.

On a side note, cernax's website design is slick. I might have to ask them to design mine in the future.

I've been with a lot of hosts, and I'd resist the temptation to just go with the cheapest, or the one that seems to offer the most. Eventually, they'll let you down with slow servers, down-time, or poor support.

LiquidWeb is good, but I'd recommend them for a dedicated server before shared hosting. I second the Telnap recommendation. A very good shared hosting provider.

Bandwidth is usually per month.

Cernax didn't design their web site, they are using a template.

That is correct, I felt it would be best focusing on the business and what I have to offer rather than hiring someone to design the site or do it myself.

I'm assuming you own Cernax, eh?

So, here's a quick question then: Can I start with a standard plan then upgrade as I grow with minimal effort (read: charges, downtime)? Here's my plan:

1) Now: email hosting -> 5 accounts, 10Mb per
2) 1-2 months: 1 domain, 2 subdomains, low bandwidth
3) 6-9 months: 1 more domain, merchant account, low bandwidth
4) 1yr +: 1 more domain, merchant account, get slashdotted, higher bandwidth.
5) Profit
6) Get crazy hoes
7) Buy out cernax ;) and make my own superbowl commercial

You wouldn't mind PM'ing me the place you got your template from. It's pretty cool.

BTW, I went to order and there isn't an option to buy a domain through cernax. Do I need to do this elsewhere?

Contact me personally, ankit@cernax.com for more details :)

As for the domain, I reccomend namecheap.com

Might want to poke around the helpdesk too: http://www.helpdesk.cernax.com/index.php?x=&mod_id=2&id=2

Upgrading can happen without any notice to users at all so there will be no downtime. Pricing will be handled accordingly, you won't overpay!

Ok .. I've gone ahead and taken RossMan's and amdskip's advice. I'm registering my name via namespace. Sorry AgaBoogaBoo, but I'm prolly going to go with telnap as it follows my gameplan better.

Thanks a lot for the help guys/girls!

Edit: OH NOES!! Telnap's SQL server is downed! Hmmm.. Cernax is looking pretty guud now!
It's 2am now, so I'll wait until the morning.
