Looking for a good USB flash drive.

I lost my 256 mb drive and am looking for a replacement.

My top choices are:
CORSAIR 2GB Flash Drive (USB2.0 Portable) Model CMFUSB2.0-2GB
Patriot Extreme Performance 2GB Flash Drive (USB2.0 Portable) Model PEF2G200USB

The Patriot says its faster, but that varies with file size as bigger files seem to go slower. I don't know how the speed of the Corsair varies but it is probably still slower.
Also the Patriot is more expensive but cheaper after rebate.
The Corsair looks better and has the brand name. Both have good warranties (I think).

I am going looking at 2GB as it is a good amount of space but still quite cheap.

Which one should I go with, or should I go with something else entirely.
I care about good performance and good reliability/durability.

Thanks

I own these four and will list them in descending order with the first one as my favorite:
1. 2GB Apacer Handy Steno
2. 4GB Patriot Extreme Exporter
3. 1GB Sandisk Cruzer Micro
4. 2GB Corsair

So with that in mind, I'd take a look into Apacer Steno line. If you don't like it then I'd definitely go for the Patriot Extreme line before even touching the Corsair model.

SanDisk ime has the best compatibility over a broader range of systems so far using a Cruzer mini 1gb and yes have used others like pny, ativa, lexar, kingston, etc. but the sandisk has always fit in strangely shaped ports even if usb 1.0 under win98 machines(after installing the small sandisk usb driver sometimes)

Which Apacer Handy Steno are you talking about? There is the basic version, the 202 and the fast 203.
The 203 specs are faster then the Patriot Extreme.
What O really like is the steel cap holder and key-chain clip. and the USB table stand is a unique touch. The only issue is that they are a little more expensive and have only a 1 year warranty. Is there a reason for this? Why isn't it better at this price level?

Are SanDisk really that much better then others as they are definitely more expensive. I missed the 2GB Sandisk for $44 at Best Buy last week. Probably would have bought it otherwise.

Thanks again.

I found my old drive. It decided to go for a couple of baths with in my washing machine along. The good part is that it still works perfectly.

It is limited in space I could use a backup. I got the Patriot extreme. The Handy Steno scared me because of the 1 year warranty otherwise the 203 would be my first choice.

Well, the Extreme is very fast. I can fill it up in a minute if not less. The rubber coating makes it fat, but not nearly as fat as I feared so it still fits anywhere I need to fit it and comes with an extended USB cable for the really tight spots.

Thanks everyone.

I don't know a heckuva lot about USB drives, so can you guys tell me what spec you look at to tell how "fast" the drive is?

FWIW, I bought a Corsair Flash Voyager not long ago and have been very happy with it. A big selling point to me was its 10-year warranty. I also really like the rubber casing -- it feels very solid and impact-resistant. Fry's has these Corsair drives on sale all the time, and I got a smokin' deal on mine. 😎

I also looked at the flash voyager, but the guys here told me to go for better alternatives like the Patriot extreme which has a lifetime warranty and very good reviews. And is also waterproof.
Now I don't know how important waterproof really is as my old one went through at least one good wash cycle and is perfectly fine.

The Patriot is also the fastest that I have seen, faster then the voyager.
Some keys have encryption software as well. I don't know about it though.

That's cool. I didn't know about the Patriot Extreme. I'll have to check that out. 🙂
