Looking for a good TV Tuner media center application

Im using Avermedia HC82 (Link)Tuner card on my laptop. Windows Media Center, picks up very few channels. Im supposed to have over 600 channels, but WMC only picks up less than 100 channels and about 3-4 HD channels. The tuner card does support ClearQAM. So I went ahead and tried using Avermedia version of media center and could never get it to recognize its own card, heh. I downloaded SageTV and picked up over 600 channels, but I get no signal for ANY channel, even the ones that WMC recognizes.

So Im wondering if anyone can recommend me a good free tv tuner media center application.

-Thanks

What is your TV source? Is it digital cable? There's a good chance that you only have a select number of channels on that cable that are broadcast in the clear. The other channels are probably encrypted which means you either need a cable box from the provider or a cable card and a compatible tuner.

Sounds like most of the channels you're getting are encrypted. The only way to view those are with a cablecard tuner, such as the Ceton http://www.cetoncorp.com/ or HDHomeRunPrime http://www.silicondust.com/products/hdhomerun/prime/.

After that, you can use Windows MCE 7 to record them, however, due to DRM issues, they will only be playable on your current system.

Keep in mind the above is only true if you have digital cable, if you have directv, as far as I know, there is not much you can do.

If you really want to record DRM free, something like the hauppage colussus http://www.hauppauge.com/site/products/data_colossus.html will help you, however it is not completely seamless.

Sounds like WMC is picking up the analog channels and the locals in HD that are unencrypted, which is the most you can ask for without a cablecard tuner. Using another media center software will not allow you to tune in encrypted channels.
