Looking for a good space sim like Elite/Frontier..

Heya

I'm looking for a really good space sim that's very nonlinear like Elite and Elite II: Frontier. In Frontier you could actually land on the planet yourself, you could dogfight, protect convoys, smuggle, trade, etc. Freelancer is pretty nice, but the jobs are booooring.. shoot this, shoot that.

Anyone know of a game that comes even close to Frontier, where there's plenty of variety in what you can do?

I'm guessing you are looking for something more recent, but if you are open to older games then Privateer is the obvious answer.

Yeah, recent is good. Privateer would be ok, but it has to support newer hardware (DirectX 9, GeForce3, WinXP). No Win95 games & DOS games.

How's Freespace 2?

Besides Privateer, Freelancer or Tachyon come to mind.

This will probably blow away anything else out now that is trying to copy the old Elite and Frontier games where you could fight, trade, land your ship yourself (not automated), etc.
