Have you played Star Wars Knights of the old Republic?

If you liked Diablo you might enjoy Sacred. Huge world, buttloads of quests and equipment and incredibly non-linear. You can literally go just about anywhere at any time. I spent hours playing it and only covered a fraction of a % of the map. The combat system is similar point and click style, with an ability combo creation system and some other interesting features. Similarly, character development is non-existant outside leveling up and customizing your characters stats and gear. Good minless fun with a little RPG backstory.

nah, plot is essential. combat is secondary. I liked sacred alright - the open-ended nature of it was great - it just had waaaaayyyy too much "run around and kill thigns for a billion years" crap.
To give you all an idea, my favorite games of all time are Quest for Glory, Castle of the Winds, Fallthru...

Played KOTOR... good game, and all of the baldur's gate / icewind dale, etc... They're not bad, but i'm looking for something with more character specilization... almost WoW-esque (with less FPS-like graphics, by which i mean pathetic attemps at some sort of realism... it amazes me how when people try to make something look more "realistic" it almost always looks worse. Computer games are not meant to be real, IMHO... embrace it, people.) , but not, because i refuse to pay monthly fees for any game.

actually, eve doesn't llok too bad, but isn't it subscription based? that violates my refusal to pay monthly fees for a game.

It's an MMORPG. 14-day free trial, but yes, paid subscription.
Might want to put "No pay to play MMO's" in the title.
And on the subject of no pay-to-play, Guild Wars?

Much as I like the game, it fails miserably on this qualifier:
plot is essential
EVE's way too open-ended.
