You really should consider the size of the notebook. So many people are buying these huge machines nowadays. I find that a lot of them are contrary to the purpose of a notebook (portability). I made size one of my primary concerns when I purchased my machine, because I'm a student lugging it around campus. For me, the Dell Latitude C400 works like a charm at 3.6 lbs with quite a bit of power. Hell, it even has enough power to let me play quite a few of my favorite games lately (example being age of mythology). Apple's new powerbooks are looking quite nice too. If moving it around a lot isn't a concern, by all means get a desktop replacement. They'll be less expensive than an ultra-portable and have more power, but I sure as hell wouldn't want to carry them around on a daily basis. Hope that helps.

My next laptop is going to be an IBM X-series (older gen, probably) Thinkpad. The older one's range from $800-1000 on eBay. Buyer beware and YMMV, of course.

You're kidding, right? $3300 for a student is a small fortune.
