Inspired by Aikouka's stern talking to in this thread: http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=31&threadid=1968308&enterthread=y

I have decided to try and find a decent emulator for Sega Genesis so I can play some Phantasy Star since I have not been able to get my hands on a Wii yet.

Does anyone know of a good one? How do the games work? Can I just buy them online somewhere?

Thanks in advance,
KT

I am totally into the phantasy stars.. IIRC, PS2 was pretty difficult, had a final boss that was quite hard. PS4 was really easy and dumbed down. 1 and 2 were pretty hardcore though.

i don't think you can buy games for an emulator, other than maybe cd based games like PS1, etc.

Kega Fusion is the best for me. It emulates the Genesis, Master System, Gear Gear, 32X and the Sega CD. Here is the link for the emu. You'll have to find roms and bioses on your own.

You will need to own the cart's before you can legally own the roms.

There isn't a place where you can legally purchase the roms to my knowledge...

Hmm, that sucks. But if I buy my buddies old cartridges I can then download roms somewhere?

He has craploads of old NES, Genesis, & Turbo-Grafx games, but no working systems (except for a SNES). He's one of those packrat types that never throws anything away.

Legally, I think the only way you're allowed to play games on an emulator is to back the game up yourself without distributing it, but... what goes on in your computer, stays in your computer ;)

PS2 is awesome. The only thing PS4 has going for it really are music, graphics, and easyness. The gameplay was decent, but dungeon crawling wasn't very exciting. At least it wasn't a pain, like PS2 sometimes got to be.

Well that really stinks. So even if I buy them from my friend I can't do that? I do not want to cross any lines here.

Yeah, there were some loooonnnggg 'dungeons' in PS2, but I remember just loving every minute of playing that game. Damn it I want to play it now!!! :|

The dungeons in PS2 was very complex and difficult, especially with all those teleporter tubes. When I bought the game, the hint book was included, and honestly I don't know how anyone could go without it. Thankfully you can find websites that display all the maps to help you out if you don't have the hint book.

My old cart is dead, so every now and then I revisit it via an emulator. I use KGEN, but now I use a different one to play on the PSP.

If you buy your friend's old cartridge, I won't lose any sleep over downloading the rom. This game has been out for how long now? There should be a statute of limitation. (I'm not saying there is).

Have fun! Take care of Nei for me.

Yeah I was wondering how difficult I would find some of the dungeons without the hintbook. Good to know the maps are out there since I would most likely have gotten lost without them!

Do the different emulators really make a difference? I mean I'm not really sure how they work to begin with, but I would assume they are all sort of the same.

I got that exact same itch recently myself. PS2 was the best RPG of it's time on any system. I like the Gens emulator, personally.

I would feel the exact same way...I wouldn't even lose any sleep over games that I owned at one point in my life.

Go emulators!
