She has seen this one and it isn't for her. She isn't into computers. She just wants to communicate with other teenagers whose vocabularies consist of more than just sex, boobs and a$$. Any parents out there :)

14 year old and you're still telling her what to do? lol :) I can't really think of any forums that doesn't talk about adult content, and use profanity. ;)

Hey, thanks from me, too.

I definitely can use both those links. Glad you asked, Mariner. :)

if she's 14 she probably will find whatever she's looking for on the net, regardless of whether you like it or not. tell her to go to yahoo chat. sure there is a lot of horny people looking to cyber and such, but it'll teach her that the net isn't the friendly little place where everyone's your friend. if you take her to one of those moderated sites, she may get the impression that it's ok to give out phone #'s and the like. just my .02

She does do the outside/sleep over with friends/4H/GirlScout/choir things, but sometimes she wants to do the chat room thing. I don't discourage this because it is a way to become familiar with computers and the internet - as long as it is moderated by an adult (read ME).

Besides, she is a straight A student (highest academic average in her class; science award, choir award, district choir, 2nd place on school tennis team, volleyball team, 2nd place VFW essay contest, blah, blah, blah). So you can see, I'm not terribly worried about her at this time.

But I may be biased:D

And, I spend enough time on these forums that it would be hypocritical to discourage e-chating.

what's wrong with this off-topic forum? I mean, there are PLENTY of computer illiterate people in here. I won't name names, but it's obviously true. We've got 14yr old guys in here...why not 14yr old girls. Who knows, she might pick up some valuable tips here...and since you frequent these boards, you could keep tabs on her.

And nutcase99,

ltk007 and urbantechie are duking it out for mariner's daughter...you being 17...that's kinda...

Trust me, any teen chat rooms is going to be filled with "14/m looking for hot girls PM me" and vice versa. Its impossible to find any intelligent conversations in them.

No argument here; I saw a literate member just the other day;) I wouldn't mind her posting here, but it isn't her kind of chat. I really think she wants something a little more mindless:Q

You are probably right piku, but I thought I would do some checking just in case someone knew of a good site.

ltk007 and urbantechie, I got just one line for you. As the song goes: "keep your feet on the ground, keep your head above water and keep your hands off my daughter";)

18 posts, 2 possibilities (1 she has previously been to) and 1 site warning.

mariner--I have corresponded with your daughter via email already. She's not a very nice girl. I believe she called me an evil person. Then, tried to make nice-nice with M&M's. Yes, I can be bought. ;)

It sounds like she comes from a good, albeit, sheltered environment. But, she's been around you, so is not totally oblivious to the weird people in the world. Yes, I warned her about you.

Good luck in your quest. I know I trust my nieces and nephews to "do the right thing", a lot more than I would have ever trusted myself at that age.

mariner,

I think it's a pretty cool thing that you are taking some partental responsibility by taking an active role in your daughter's internet surfing. At least you can be there if and when she is (inevitably) exposed to provocative content, which much like life, is everywhere. Kudos to you :)

I'm in the same boat, w/a 13 yr old daughter. Fortunately she's just into the emails right now, but I'ld like to find her a could of chats that I won't have to be worried about. I'll check into the ones mentioned. For those that have already commented about sheltering 'em too much, considering what they get at school and at lots of places on the Net, I just try and show her what "should" be, then leave it up to her common sense and make certain that she knows I respect her when she has the strength to make the right choice.

I could beat up urbantechie, LTK007, Nutcase, AND AlphaIVT...well, that last one was just thrown in for fun cuz it would be so much fun. ;) Heheh, just kidding...I'm not a fighter. :)

You want to sheild her from adult content.
Keep her away from the internet.
Its not family friendly yet. ;)
And I hope it never becomes that.
