Looking for a good fan controller

I hate the fact that my computer sounds like a airconditioner with my 5 case fans, so I've started looking at purchasing a fan controller to keep the noise levels down. Although I'd prefer a fan controller that could take all 5 of my case fans, 4 would be acceptable also since one of my fans is pretty quiet. I would prefer the controller to be silver since I have a silver chieftec dragon case, but if the controller is really good, a different color would be fine. I don't care much for led lights, but if it does have lights, i would like them to be blue. Any recommendations?

Wow, you just described the exact item I just got. Here it is:

Sunbeam Rheobus (silver) from SVC $17.99

Great stuff at 20w per channel and smooth turning constant resistant knobs that click when you turn them off. Very professional. As for the LEDs, they're bi-polar Red/Blue. When the voltage drops below 7v, they turn to red. When you turn them up past 7v, they turn blue. Be prepared, the LEDs are extremely bright. Great item though, grab one.

I have sunbeam, works well. Its nice to be able to turn off completely one of the intake fans when i am not gaming while turning down the other fans to 7v and below.

looks nice. two questions- if the fan doesn't have a 3-pin connector, can I still use it with the controller? Also, does the controller come with a 3-pin extension cord? The 3 pin connector on my thermaltake fan is really small.

Hrmm I couldn't remember what it came with. I think it had a short 4-pin to 3-pin adapter which is hard to find these days, and a 4-pin pass through. But yes, you can take a 4-pin and insert it into a 3-pin header. I had about 10 extra 3-pin wires and I just spliced them together. If you notice, a fan only has two wires coming out of it (ground and 12v I think) to the 4-pin head. Just take those two wires, snip em, and connect it to a 3-pin head. That easy. If you don't have any heads, you might want to try and find a regular rheobus. They don't have the headers, they just have places to stick bare leads into (which is handier IMO). But a rheobus doesn't come with a plate, you have to drill your own.

while looking at googlegear I found a controller by Nexus. Is this good? A review I found said that it came with two 4 pin to 3 pin converters and two 3 pin extension cords. Is this controller any good?

Another vote for the sunbeam. The ability to turn something completely off is a major plus. Especially good if you wish to connect cathodes to it. And you can connect several fans to each channel.

Only bad thing about it is the leds, while blue, they are blindingly bright. If you aim your case out your window at night they will light up your whole yard. No need for 300watt floodlights.

I bought a Sunbeam, but it didn't have 2 or 3 pin connectors for the fans, rather it had the two wire screw down terminals. It also didn't have the graphics on the face plate that a lot of people hated.

Call me crazy, but I've connected two pairs of fans (one pair with LEDs on both fans) to one terminal each, a single fan to cool my video card on another and two Sunbeam CCFLs (via a single inverter) to the last terminal. Works like a charm!

oooh, check out this puppy. The other 3.5" version is a good one so I expect good things from this one also. This one can shut off each channel, like the sunbeam. :)

Will be out in September.

ok, after the overwhelming show of support for the sunbeam, i've decided to order that one. plus svc has the cables i need, so i'll get the cables from them also. Before I buy it, i jut how 1 question. how big are those knobs? will i be able to close the door on my chieftec case with the thing installed?

Take your pick!

The sunbeam is good, but the leds are bright and the option to turn off the fans completely can be potentially dangerous to unattentative users. It controls up to 4 fans. Does anyone know how it controls cathode lights?

The PWM noise isolator fan controller looks really good, more aesthetically pleasing than the sunbeam and can control up to 6 fans and 2 cathode lights. It only drops to 7V though.

The vantec 5.25" was the first mainstream fan controller and still looks great among others, but it's losing against newer ones with more fuctionality. It can handle 4 fans and drops to 7V lowest.

Aerogate II is the newest and spiffiest with lcd (temp and rpm monitoring) and can control 4 fans. It also has the ability to change the lcd lights multiple colors. It is also the most expensive.

This one looks really nice and is cheaper than the Aerogate II. It has an lcd (temp and rpm monitoring) and has interchangeable faceplates to match cases. It also has mutliple color lights behind its lcd like the aerogate.

There are tons more and they all have their capabilities and price tag, so pick which one best suits you.

Not a problem. They stick out, but you can still close the door fully. ;)

Does anyone know how it controls cathode lights?

Works fine with cathodes and can turn them completely off.

I really want one of the spiffy digital controllers, ala the Digidoc 5+, but they only turn fans on/off; they don't offer speed control which really sucks.

I can deal with fans running all the time and I can deal with fans not running, but fans constantly cycling on and off would annoy the crap out of me, I think.

Who out there has one of the Digital ones that cycle fans on/off? Do you like it? Thoughts?

How does the cathode plug to the sunbeam fan controller?

How does the cathode plug to the sunbeam fan controller?

First you do need 4-3 pin adapters for the sunbeam if you want to connect fans that have a 4 pin molex connector or/and a cathode. The sunbeam has just 3 pin male connectors. None are included but they are usually round a buck each. Connect the cathode to the sunbeam using the 4-3 pin adapter, and leave the cathode switch on. Now the on/off of the cathode will be controlled by the sunbeam. ;)
