My birthday is coming up and i am looking for a good/great CD/DVD-RW -R+R to ask the parents about. I rarely copy stuff, but i am thinking about a good 8x - 10x speed one. Any recommendations? Links to reviews would be great.

Have not seen the MSI mentioned a lot here. Doesn't mean it's not good.

very true, but THG sucks, so most likely that burner does too 😀

The $83 NEC dual-layer drive is definitely the best deal you can get. Here's a review of the single-layer version.

The real question, though, is if you rarely copy stuff, why do you want a DVD-RW? Can't you think of anything better to ask for?

tostado -- my old cd burner is dieing so i need something to replace it. But once i get a good DVD burner and i plan to do some mad warez with it. And second thing, no, i can't think of anything else to ask for. I'm fine with what i have.

My bro just recommended Plextor. I know they are a great brand, but from a cost/performance point, are they the best?

ok, so right now, it comes down to the:

NEC 2510A, 8X DL, at $82.99

Lite-On - SOHW 832S, 8 DL, at $98.99

Plextor - PX 708A, 8 SL, at $144.69

Lite On - SOHW 1213S, 12 SL, at $97.99

i am leaning towards the Lite On, since the NEC is new to me. Any suggestions?

it totally is up to you man, Ive got a 4x one i got for $99...yea its a cheap brand but it gets the job done...and all of these things are the same. I wouldnt go all out and buy an expensive one, you can fin a good 8x one for like 80 bucks..so in that case, go with the nec or the lite-on

ok, after more research, it is down to the NEC and the Lite Non 832S. The difference being being about $20 in price.

Both are 8x DL, so really which is the best?

how many times do we gotta say NEC in this forum? about 5 different posts a day people ask which dvd rw everyone recommends a nec and they end up getitng a nec

are there any reviews here of the NEC vs the Lite On 832S?\

How much more reliable and durible is the NEC vs the Lite On vs Plextor? What is throwing me off is the low price of the NEC. I am used to equating cheap price with sucky quality (think Powmax PSUs vs Antec PSUs).

If i buy the NEC, in 12-18months down the road will i be wishing I bought the lite on or plextor?

BenQ DW800A @ 1121 and still burning 🙂

NEC - good community firmware support , good prices , widely available.
Pioneer's arent too bad either (I have myself an old DVR-105) but not the best value for money.
