Looking for a good budget card. Should I get a GF2MX or will the next gen hold something interesting?

I know nVida has little hardware geeks jizzing all over themselves in anticipation of the NV20, but frankly I could not possibly care less what the NV20 offers beucase it's going to be at least 3x what I want to pay for a Video card.

(that wasn't meant to cause offense, if I thought I'd be able to afford it without living on the streets for a few months I'd be excited to...but it's hard to get excited about a video card that's worth 2 months rent, and yes the Creative GF2 Ultra is $800 I pay $400/month so it is literally 2 months rent)

A GeForce2 GTS at $320 Canadian for the Asus V7700 is the absolute max I'd pay. I'd much rather buy a V7100 for $180 Canadian. I find the price of an Ultra rather offensive really.

Want I'm looking for is the budget side, do you think the next generation will have a low cost card? Or should I just get an MX now....I might possibly spring for the GTS but I doubt it....

Have you gone to multiple displays? Trust me, you will not only like it, you will consistently demand it for eternity. The Leadtek GF2MX DH Pro is the way to go. $133, I think.

Hmm I hadn't considered dual displays....I have been toying with the idea of getting one of those nice Samsung 900NFs or whatever...(the 19" flatscreens) and that would give me something to do with my 17"

I can certain deal with $133 for the card....that's actually quite a good idea...thanks for the tip SUO..

Or you could opt for the Elsa GF2GTS deal floating around for around 127. It doesn't have any extras, but it's a GTS for the price of an MX.

I'll second the vote for the LeadTek until you're ready to drop some major bucks along with having a system where the v-card is truly the bottleneck.

TakedownCA:

Where did you see this deal? I'm in Canada, can I still get it?
That's a killer deal if I can get my hands on it....

The Elsa is actually $162 now but if you use the 30 off $150 coupon you can get it for about $140 Shipped, if you need the coupon PM Me and i'll send it over to you.

hey u....i'm suggesting the PowerColor Evil Kyro 64MB video card for u...they're approx. $200 CDN and perform far better than the geforce 2 MX based cards...for roughly the same price...

don't be afraid.

also pccanada (www.pccanada.com) sells the v7700 for $295CDN....they're stuff is probably the cheapest around (or so i've found) as is www.canadacomputers.com

check it out

and remember, evil kryo is the name of my sponser, erm, favorite video card...

In your rig thing, it says you have a voodoo 3. What games do you play, and does the v3 do fine for your current needs? Personally, I'm going to hold onto my Voodoo 3, Until the next gen comes out. Hopefully, this will bring the price of GeForce2's down, and I will then buy one of those. If not, I'm not out any money. You can find an OEM Geforce2 in FS/FT for $150 shipped, which isn't bad. It's up to you, though.

probably not a bad idea...I was sort of considering that....but how much do you think the GF2 will drop when the next gen comes out?

200cdn for a Kryo eh nortexoid? Ok i'm listening...where? How's the performance? Do they have good driver support?

driver support, from what i've heard, is considerably good...

performance - check these out:

recent
http://www.inside-hardware.net/budget-videocard/Page1.html
http://www.sharkyextreme.com/hardware/articles/kyro_in-depth/

not recent
http://firingsquad.gamers.com/hardware/evilkyro/default.asp
http://www4.tomshardware.com/graphic/00q4/001129/index.html

keep in mind that the not-so recent articles aren't a real reflection of its performance since it's lacking the most recent drivers used which considerably increase the card's performance level...especially in OpenGL (it already dominated in direct3d, for the most part, in the beginning - i.e. mercedes truck..., deusex, expendable, etc....

i read another recent review of the card where it was just dominating the geforce 2 mx everyhwere, but i can't find it at the moment - needless to say, it's definitely an awesome card (especially for the moola)...

where can u buy it? - check w/ local vendors, otherwise check pricewatch, etc....(is there a canadian equivalent?)...do a search, check powercolor and inno3d's websites...these cards are available...let me doa quick check...ah! - i found the recent review vs. an geforce MX...i put it up as the first url under recent....anyway, i gotta sleep - but check it out...

another vote for the kyro 64mb.

what ive seen with the kyro cards are that 16bit color they are about the same as the mx. BUT, 32bit color (which id rather run games at), has very little performance loss. which is a major plus. As for driver support. Pretty good. Ive seen many versions come out, and they seem to get better in performance everytime. It's definatly worth a try.

just my 4 cents

Hmm thanks for the links.

I will check them out. That might be a good card for me..I got my Voodoo3 for about $230 canadian (after taxes and stuff..) with a $30US mail in rebate, and I'd like to try and spend that kind of money again....

I'll check out the links thanks.
