I've been reading a lot about the history of rock and musicians (Clapton's Autobiography, Zeppelin, etc.) and also have been reading a lot of murder/crime nonfiction books like Helter Skelter, Zodiac, etc. Anyone have any good recommendations in these categories? I looked for Vincent Bugliosi books (he wrote Helter Skelter, which was an amazing book) and I found this book... but who the hell is Henry Stockton?

Recommend me something :p

I don't read much in that genre, but maybe The Zodiac? Seems like an interesting crime story.

[edit]Apparently I can't read, because you already mentioned The Zodiac. No recommendations from me then :)[/edit]

I read Salt - A World History a little while back and found it absolutely fascinating. Not everyone's cup of tea I guess, but it is a very interesting read.

I got this tupac book at barnes and noble for 5 dollars. It was originally 40 but the cover was slightly crushed so it ended up in the bargain bin. He was a murdered musician so that's 3/4 of your criteria in one book.

"The Killer Angels," by something Shaara. Unfortunately, I think it's an Oprah book now, but it won the Pulitzer a long time ago. It's a hyper detailed historical fiction book about the battle of Gettysburg, where the only things he makes up are bits of dialogue, with as much as possible coming from diary entries, etc. It's incredibly accurate and a ton of fun. There are lots of maps of troop movements and stuff, but it reads as well as a novel. Definitely a must-read.

I would recommend "And the Sea will Tell" by Bugliosi. The first half was outstanding. I didn't like the second half as much, which is about the trial but overall an excellent book.

My personal favorite non-fiction book is "Endurance" by Alfred Lansing about Ernest Shackleton's Antarctic expedition.

A Foreign Policy of Freedom - Ron Paul

Meh, nevermind. I just read your desired subjects. No history, eh? :(

I really enjoyed Bill Bryson's A Short History of Nearly Everything. I ended up reading it out of sequence and was really disappointed when I ran out of chapters to read. It is a mix of the history of the universe, the Earth, etc. and also the history of humans discovering how the universe works--including successes a failures. Really puts things in perspective, how massive (or how minuscule) and amazing some natural systems are.

I also was looking at that but couldn't figure out what it was about. I enjoyed the trial part of Helter Skelter, but maybe I'm just weird. :p

Looks cool. I might have to buy a few books after posting on ATOT....

I should of known that was going to happen. :)

I was also looking at Covert. My mom gave me the idea of that one and it looks pretty good.
