Looking for a good beginner's pipe

I'm vacationing in Myrtle Beach I've been smoking one of those cheap Corn Cob pipes and I think I'm sold on the whole concept. I'm not a smoker per se, but I enjoy smoking cigars in the past, but everything about pipes seems to fit me better. I'm looking at getting a decent pipe to keep ($50 - $75) and I'm looking for suggestions. Shape, brand, etc... There's a decent smoke shop down here that I can get one from and I'm looking for tips. I know a lot of it is personal preference, but i figure any tips can help me choose.

Corn cob's one of the best pipes you can get. I've got a few briars, but never had a meerschaum. Unless you really want to get into it as a hobby, I'd stick with the cobs. Pipes can be fun to collect, but it's a lot of money. Speaking of collecting, you may want to get a clay pipe. They aren't the best smokers, but they're cheap, and cool due to the history.

I smoke a pipe, have since college. I never really researched the different pipes out there. Just went to the local tobacco shop and asked the owner which one I should get. He directed me to one and there, done.

First: NO DR. GRABOW. If you can buy it in a drugstore (cheap cobs excepted since they are hard to screw up) it's going to be crappy.

For a noob it's generally recommended to look for something with a bit of a bend to the stem. This recommendation is generally made b/c you don't have to be as careful about keeping the bowl angled down to prevent juices from running up into your moth. Since you've been smoking cobs you've already got some experience there, so if you see a straight stem you like you need not rule it out immediately.

It's also recommended to look for something with a thicker hull which will have less risk of overheating and burning through.

Otherwise, just look for something you like. You may also want to consider where/how you would be smoking. For example, a churchwarden with a 2' long stem is not very convenient to carry around or hold in your teeth. Fine for a stroll or reading a book...a pain while traveling or driving. Do you like to smoke for hours at a time? Look for a bigger bowl.

I definitely prefer pipes to cigars these days...the tobacco is easier to store and keep fresh, 2 cigars' worth of it will last a looong time, the smoke is lighter, cooler and does not linger as long, and when the smoking is done you've still got something left to show for it. These days I try to pick one up when I travel...makes a great unique functional memento.

Then you can have a hands-on experience and see what pipes exist, price ranges, tobacco variations, and even walk out with exactly what you want. Wham, bam, done.
