Or the X-32 --> more powerful, but a hair thicker and 6/10's of a pound heavier.

x41 is 2.6# with standard battery w/o counting the power brick... X32 is 3.3 with standard battery without counting the power brick.

unless you need lots of graphics i'd go with a fujitsu, for small and light they really can't be beat, you may even manage to get a larger screen and stay really light

ibm x series. I had x30 and upgraded to x31. I was going to upgrade my laptop to something better when I had my x30. I got the 700m side by side with me, but I decided to sell it. the keyboard on the 700m is totally crap compare to ibm. 700m was at least 2x faster than my x30, but ibm won me. now I can't be happier with my x31.

my sis sold her toshiba for a t40.

Alienware Sentia. Pentium M up to 2.1Ghz with 12.1" Widescreen. Looks like a fantastic machine.

There is currently also a $400 rebate, so the starting price is $999. You can get yourself a 2.1Ghz M with 1GB of RAM and a 60GB 7200rpm (!) HDD and a DL DVD Burner for $2050... or save yourself a few hundred bucks and go with a 2.0.

Personally, I had a 12" Powebook up until a few weeks ago and now have a 15" Powerbook. They are absolutely brilliant, and the 12" is tiny, but still completely usable. However, I understand that it's not everyone's cup of tea. If you can stomach going to Apple, then by all means, go for it. But as far as Wintel goes, that Alienware looks like my pick.

Just noticed justflow's post on Fujitsu notebooks. I also used to have a Fujitsu Lifebook (yeah I know, I've gone through way too many laptops)... can't for the life of me remember the model number, but it was a Transmeta-based tiny one with an 8.4" screen or something.

Anyway, the thing was horrible. I didn't expect it to be quick with a Crusoe inside, but reliability was horrible and within a few months the screen hinge was broken and the paint had completely flaked. Not quite what I expected for the money it cost.

That's only my experience and I'm sure they probably do some nice systems, but experience has to count for something!

Hmmm... I think I had one of those ages ago too. An X10 or something? I remember it having a little light at the top of the screen to light up the keyboard in the dark... far cry from the fiber optic lighting in my Powerbook keyboard. Was solid as a rock though, from memory.
