I'm loving my Dell 700m. Its price is way under $2k, which was a big point for me.

I really like most Asus stuff, but I can't believe how ugly the W5A is compared to other Asus models.

12" laptops seem to fall into 2 categories. Either they're ultraportable or they're not. The 700M, for example, isn't really lighter or thinner than a lot of 14" laptops out there, so you're getting a cramped keyboard and small screen on a laptop that isn't really that small. Others that are ultraportable are missing optical drives, have slow 1.8" hard drives, and have the ultra-low-voltage CPUs that are significantly slower than most laptops.

That Acer you linked looks very nice to me. It's only 3.1 lbs... I can't think of anything else that light with a good hard drive and good CPU. The CDRW is external, but there's really no avoiding that. Notice that it does have a decent amount of empty space around the screen and keyboard, though. Its dimensions are 11.7" x 8.3" x 1.3". The Latitude X1 also has a 12.1" screen, but its dimensions are 11.26" x 7.7" x 0.98".

It really depends on what you want to give up for the sake of portability. Having a small keyboard and a 12" screen is already giving up plenty, so you might want to go all the way and get something smaller like the X1.

Talk about a stupid post.

There are good things to say about PowerBooks, but plenty bad things, too. The cost, the battery life, the warranty (a decent warranty adds $350 and still doesn't have on-site service). The best part is OSX, but that's only if you happen to like OSX. The fact that the OP specifically said he wanted Intel should tell you that he's not excited about OSX.

While you are at it - don't forget to take a look at the new IBM X41. Great for the road warrior. Good value at $1899 or less.

I do believe he said "would like to" instead of "have to" stay on the intel side of things.

I looked into this a while ago. I ended up with an Averatec. Meets my needs and the bang for buck was very good. But, I'm not recommending that. With your budget, I'd confer with CorkyG. The IBM X41 is supposed to be a dynamite computer.

I thought that meant no AMD :p Macs weren't even mentioned.

Yeah, battery life on the PB's isn't crash hot afaik (only about 4 - 5 hours). The iBooks are much better, but they don't have an Intel chip in them, so I suppose they're out of the question until next year. lol

I guess a really strong point for the Apple 12" laptops is the keyboard. They actually take up the full width of the laptop. It's just so annoying that there are 12" laptops like the 700M that have wasted space around the keyboard. If they designed it like Apple, the keyboard would be a full inch wider.

i have a 700m also and have no problems at all with the keyboard, if your budgest is under 2k you can really get lots of stuff into the 700m and its 4lbs with an optical drive. so you could get 2gig of memory a 2ghz + p-m processor with a dvd burner and you'll still be under 2k as long as you wait for a deal which comes around every month.

if you have any questions about it id be happy to answer some for you.

That's why the iBook is $999 before the EDU discount if you're a student...

I would get the 700M. There is a 750 off coupon right now and you can configure LOTS of stuff in it for 2k. Only sore point is that it has a horrible video card.

You can get a 2 GHZ pentium M with 2 batteries and a CD/DVD RW drive with 1GB of Ram for 2000. This will include a wireless mouse, 3 year warrenty, and a dock.
