How fast do you want to go?

I helped design and build one that used the engine from a 1981 CBX ( straight 6 motorcycle ) Also known as a shifter cart.

First things to go on was the wheelie bar :) Unfortunately, the place that built it ( and supplied all the labor besides mine ) and myself had an argument over who owned it, ( I supplied all the materials and design ) and they refused to sell their stake, so we split it up. I took the engine and transaxle while they got the frame.

or are you looking for a 5hp go cart?

Lets make this simple. under 50 or over 100?

You can easily hit 120 or so with a 125cc shifter cart. Expect to pay 5-7k. Less for used.

under 40 is easy too. Hell, costco sells go carts that will do that. Expect to pay $1-2k new, or $200-300 for a frame used, 3-500 for a serius engine ( 5-15 HP honda or B&S ) and 300-400 for a good set of brakes, $200-300 for tires, plus 200 or so for the little things.

If you are lookin in the higher speeds and you are new to it go with a Rotax 125cc

They are pretty fast still, plus their maintinance is very very low, prolly get into one for abo0ut 4K - 5K

I own two of those. Just to give you some pointers. There are primarily 3 kinds of drive-trains you can get. A single axel, a live axel, and ....well, can't remember the kind, but rather than a centrifugal clutch, it has a belt-drive on it...but it is also a live axel. A single axel will go faster since all the power is concentrated in one place. A live axel will be a little slower, but does better off pavement. I would expect to pay around $500-750 for a decent cart.

Go live axle.

Single driven wheel can get wierd at high speeds ( like 20+ ) I had one, and would stomp on it, and the cart would wip around the un-driven wheel :)
