Looking for a generic wireless software control panel

I'm a resnet technician and I get to fix all the wireless problems in our wireless dorm. We have 3 types of usb wireless adapters students can check out. 2 work fine, the 3rd which is 3com sucks majorly. What is happening is that they change from access point to peer to peer connecting to each other and making one huge mess. XP wireless settings are sucking it up and the 3com software sucks. What I am looking for is some sort of software instead of the 3com. Is there anything out there? It must be a free download too.
