Looking for a gaming LCD...

I am aware of the fact that the lcds are not on level with crts however I am more concerned with the amount of space that the monitor takes. I'm looking at buying a 17" lcd w/ DVI for under $500. I've been looking around but I haven't seen very many deals on a good monitor. Currently I am buying the NEC 1760nx-1 from dell for 481.60 but I am thinking about just cancelling it because I was charged $35 for tax (apparently CA is charged for tax by Dell as of 2/09/04). I was also looking at the Hitachi CL-175B for I think $400 but I read some negative reviews pertaining to the color accuracy and such. Also...I wanted the 16ms response time for the lcds because I want to use it for gaming as well. Anyone have any suggestions on what I should get or if I should stick with my current order or wait for another deal? I basically want a monitor that is good with color accuracy and has a good response time. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

Viewsonic VP171B is a great LCD, but the problem is that it's about 550.

Where is a good reliable place to research lcd monitors? I think it will be my next upgrade, but am in no hurry and would like to research. That way if a great deal happens, I will be prepared.

Got my Viewsonic VP171B from Dell for $431 (total) last summer (2003). I do like it and play FPS games, see my sig!

I usually do a search for specific reviews like "Review Viewsonic VP171B". As for deals...look the usual places like Newegg, Dell, Monitorsdirect and Hot-deals.org, hotdeals forum (anandtech), etc.

Good Luck.

I'm in the same position and I have a few questions.

From what I've seen the Hercules Prophetview 17" (20ms) looks to be an outstanding monitor for gaming and overall usage from the reviews I've seen, but I've never seen anyone even sugguest it on these forums. Is it just not really well known, or is it not reccomended over other monitors? Maybe for the price? ($500 for the non DVI model.) I trust opinions here, but this is one I'm a bit leery about. I've seen plenty of sugguestions for the Viewsonic, but not the Prophetview. If I'm going to shell out $500+ for a monitor, I would like as much feedback as possible on this kind of stuff.

Can anyone give me some thoughts on this?

I can't even find it to buy online. Found a review, but that's about it.

I have also been searching for that lcd by hercules. I don't think that they have hit the US yet. It was only available in December and only in the UK. I have located a few UK sites but nothing here. PM me if you find it, it's the monitor I would like to have.

Thanks
