Looking for a Fun\realistic Racing game

I am getting an xbox 360 and to date I have never played any games on the new xbox 360 system.

I recently won a pretty decent deal on Ebay where I am getting 4 games...but I was hoping to pick up a fun racing game

I was hoping for something that had a damage model...ect...was realistic to some degree...

I liked the Grand Turismo series but that gets pretty old after awhile...

Something like need for speed sounds fun but I don't know if that would be too arcadish.

I have heard some varying things about the "Burnout" series...the newest one appears to be you either hate it or you really like it.

Any advice? out of the current games I reviewed I saw the following

Forza 2 Uber realistic...not sure if that would be too much micro managing.
PGR4 Kind of the same...seems to be the same thing as Turismo series
Burnout Kind of arcade...kind of realistic...

Thanks for any recommendations...

It really depends on what you are looking for.

Able to fully customize, tweak, and tune cars? Forza 2

Like circuit/track racing? Forza 2 or PGR3/4

Like an open world/freedom? Burnout: Paradise

Multiplayer? Forza 2 or Burnout: Paradise

Simulation? Forza 2

Arcade/Simulation? PGR 3/4

Arcade? Burnout: Paradise

Test Drive Unlimited might also be worth looking at. It drives more realistically than Burnout, but is definitely still arcade-y (Burnout is about crashing and insane speeds, TDU is not). It is an open world, and setup like an MMO. You can do single-player events, but will run into other players along the way. You can challenge them on the spot or organize multiplayer races.

Plus it's an older game, so it's cheap. 🙂

The PGR series hovers between being realistic and arcadey. So, that might be a good choice if you aren't into micro manging.

Forza 2 is really friendly enough to those who aren't into micro managing every detail of their car plus it can be fun buying upgrades and modifying your car.

purbeast loves the Burnout series so that's worth a try at least.

Test Drive: Unlimited uses the same open formula of Burnout: Paradise just without all the insane crashes and more into car collecting, buying houses/garages, etc. FamilyVideo.com has it for $19.99 right now.

There's MotoGP if you like motorcycles.

There's also the Need for Speed series but that was never my cup of tea.

Pretty much all of these games have demos up on Live. So go download and try them.

so downloading the demos is free? do you need a membership or is that something you get with I believe it is called the silver package/membership?

I was looking for something that was realistic to the point of hitting a wall gave you damage to your car....not just letting you bounce off of everything going 100 mph.

I saw some videos of burnout and it looked entertaining but it also looked like it could get old.

PGR4 seemed cool but no damage to cars that I could see...

Forza 2 seemed cool but from what i read the A.I. is dumb as hell and you can use them as bumpers around the track...

I didn't look into test drive unlimited...I will have to check that out!

Is there anything on the horizon as far as new games for racing?

Try to use the other cars as bumpers without the Stability/Traction assists turned on and your butt is in the wall using anything faster than a C class machine.

The demos are free to both Gold and Silver (free) Xbox Live members. So have at them all.

Yep. Demos are free. Just need a silver membership at minimum which is free.

PGR4 has some damage but it is mostly cosmetic. Forza 2 has damage. You'll still be able to drive but your power and handling will be drastically affected. I don't find the AI bad when driving comparable cars.

Not really. GDC is next week though. New games for the 360 for '08 should be mentioned then.

I was referring to the damage model...nothing regarding the actual game play...

if that makes sense...

We have a weekly Forza 2 night where 6-10 of us get together and race together. The multiplayer aspect of the game is really fun, especially when everybody knows each other and has a mic.

I will see if I can find a used copy of ebay!!! I will get back to you if I can find a cheap copy...

Check gamestop for used copies of forza. They were part of the holiday bundle and a lot of people dumped it. I love forza 2.

I need to get in on your Forza night with you guys but I haven't been able to play that much due to being in my last year of grad school 🙁
