I'm building a new comp using an ECS K7S5A mobo and an athlon XP 1800+ processor

I want to get a fast HD so I'm not bottlenecking there too much....

But i also don't have tons of cash to spend... i'd like to be in the $100-$150 if at all possible

Atleast 40 GB if possible...

Any recommendations?

Thanks in Advance

Some of the fastest drives I've ever worked with were the IMB Deskstar series. Unfortunatly, the 75GXP's have very high death rates, and frankly, I'm not sure the 60GXP's are going to be any better.

Your best bet is to get a ATA100 drive with a spindel speed of 7200RPM. Does that board have ATA100 built in? If not, you'll need a controller card to get the full speed of the drive.

The Maxtor D740X is what you want. Cheap (~$85 for 40GB) and comes in sizes up to 80GB, I think.

EDIT: The 80GB D740X is $153 + shipping from Newegg.com.

yeah it runs ATA100.

I found a couple good Maxtor drives for around $100

I've used a couple of them in my time and they're been very reliable for me....

It also outperforms the IBM 60GXP in many situations.

I was going to recommend the Western Digital 1000BB-SE to you, but it's $202 + shipping from Newegg.com. Outperforms basically everything.

Seagate Barracuda IV is also pretty good, IMO. IBM drives are definately fast and probably with best seek times but my 40Gb 60GXP just died after 2 month of usage :(
