I want to upgrade an optical drive in my rig. The CD-DVD player just crapped out, and I want to replace it with a DVD burner.
Nothing elaborate, just a solid, all purpose unit. What have you have and what do you recommend?
Thank you.

I have a Samsung, this one I think and it has been great to me so far.

I also put a Samsung drive in my laptop. I have had good success with their drives and would definitely recommend them.

I've used several brands in the past - Plextor, Samsung, Sony.

Currently I'm using an NEC burner and it is the best burner I have used. I burn a ton of disks and cannot remember ever getting a coaster (I use primarily Verbatim media). The Dual-Layer capability on the drive is great and has proven to be very reliable even at 8x burns.

Here is a link to the latest NEC drive Link

The NEC drives are now rebadged Sony Optiarc. They are very noisey IMO. I just traded away the same drive you have linked because of this. NEC used to be very good, but I think their quality has taken a turn for the worse with their arrangement with Sony.

Been using Lite-On since they started up...no problems ever. The 16X drives that are out now are inexpensive and loaded with technology! They are accepting of various kinds of media also (I use Maxell, Sony, HP, Memorex, TDK, Verbatim, etc. disks all the time!)

I've got a Plextor SATA burner (in my sig) and it's the best burner I've ever used. It was a bit pricey, but I was lured by the prospect of having no legacy connections (IDE, PS2, Floppy). :D

I just bought the Samsung 183L and so far it is fantastic. I got a SATA connection and didn't overpay like Solema for his Plextor ;)

Got it for $30 if you include the paypal rebate at newegg.

I've used Samsung, LiteOn, NEC and a no name brand. They all worked well, I'd buy the cheapest. And buy from a B&M if they have good prices just in case of issues you can return it w/o shipping it and waiting for the replacement.

Yeah they are. Also you can get the Samsung SATA for $49 at MicroCenter if you have one nearby.
