Great Danes are good apartment dogs, you wouldnt think if since they are so big, but they dont bark, and they dont run around. They are also very friendly to children and other dogs. Granted most apartments wont allow a dog that big, and they also eat a ton of food. Great Danes just lounge around all day. They may be big, but they dont require alot of space, well unless you live in a tiny apartment.

Wire Hair Fox Terrier

Aside from being somewhat neurotic, she's a wonderful dog and very entertaining.

My favorite is the Welsh Terrier... I grew up with one and she was amazing. :)

Of course, there are plenty of homeless animals that need homes, so don't rule out them!

btw i found an awesome site with listings of breeders in ca and the rest of the US

http://www.breeders.net/find.php

if anyone has anymore listings, post the site!

another question: i'm not sure if it's true and i dont mean to offend anyone and their dog but is it true that mixed dogs are generally dumber and relatively less healthy compared to purebred?

Toto (Toe Toe!) was a Cairn Terrier.

Another very lovely breed... I'm a fan of most terriers, they are big dogs in small bodies. :)

but just thought I'd check with all of you.

You're asking a lot. How about saving a dog from the pound? There are so many unsaved fantastic dogs from shelters that are gased and put down because they run out of room. We have five dogs that we rescued and each have fabulous dispositions and have learned obedience. Save the older dogs because the puppies will always be taken and why not give the older dogs a chance? We have two dogs that are >10 years old and they're great.

This reminds me of a story that does nothing for me but get me pissed off. My mom's friend got a new kitchen put in and she didn't want the cat to scratch up the new wood floor so they had it put to sleep. That made me physically ill. I'm not a big cat fan but that was just plain fvcking wrong. WTF is wrong with people?!

Friendly? From a Basenji? I have one, and she hates strangers. Only will go near 3 people. Me, my mom, and my step-dad. Everyone else, she shys away from, and if I'm holding her, she'll try to attack them for coming near me.

Other then that part, I agree. Very intelligent dog. She virtually housebroke herself do to the purchase of Second Nature dog liter, and a medium size litter box. The shedding is virtually non-exixtent, fleas and ticks are not a problem either. Basenji's only have one layer of fur, nu undercoat, so perisites don't have much room to hide. Sound wise, she never barks, and only yodels when extremely happy.

We have a Cardigan Welsh Corgi at our house. My daughter found him wandering the neighborhood and took him to the owner and the owner said that he found him alongside the highway and we could have him. Why not? The dog never barks and seemingly had some sort of obedience training. Very good natured. Great indoor pet. Can't speak to shedding 'cause we haven't had him long.

We have had 2 official dogs in my life, 4 total. A black lab was our first dog who used to jump over my crib when I was a baby to go growl at the door and not let anyone near me unless they were my parents. Sadly we moved and she had to go to a farm. I don't remember her but she sounded cool, fighting for me in my corner. Gotta love that. :) Two dogs that were strays of sorts have lived with us and we cared for them. Our current dog was left with us after her owner was sent to jail and no, we don't live in a bad neighborhood. She is what we call a poi dog, a little bit of everything, although I think she is mainly collie. She is a great laid back dog, just a little afraid of water. I think labs are great dogs or collies, the dogs that I have had experience with. I like a dog's dog, not some little rat of a dog. If you want something like that get a cat, who seem to care less what you do, heh.

Is there a particular breed that does not mind being alone too much?

I just saw a show on Shar Pei's on Animal Planet today....they're so wrinkly and adorable...especially the puppies.

I have a german shepherd/husky mix....and she's ok...but too big for my tastes.
My bf has a yorkshire terrier...totally adorable...so very sweet. He gets "angry" when he sees someone hitting another person.

I've always wanted to know what breeds are ok being alone...didn't read thru the rest of the thread to see if there was a reply....

But yea..good luck w/ your search!

I have a lhasa apso.
She likes to play pretty rough, and she's AKC registered.

advantages:
- great indoor alarm
- shows alot of love (not aloof)
- doesn't shed too much
- friendly (to an extent)
- very smart
- indoor/paper trained

disadvantages
- needy
- not friendly to strangers (they were bred as indoor guard dogs...basically alarms to signal the bigger dogs)
- not good with kids (unless the child is there first) - Lhasa are generally jealous
- whatever you do, don't get two of them, they'll bond with each other and won't bond with you.

If I was to get a small dog that didn't have long sheddy hair or barked a lot I would get a Dachshund end of story :)

Old English Sheep Dog! You gotta get them shaved/groomed every 6 months though. If you don't, they look like crap and will start to shed. Sheep Dogs are supposed to have long hair, but we keep ours nice and short..... and she doesn't shed at all.

I live in an apartment, and my fiance wants to get a dog. I don't really mind dogs, but I do not like little fugly hairy yappers. How would a Great Dane or a Mastiff do in a med size apt? We have a nice sized back yard.

My dogs.

A Beagle sounds to fit what you're looking for. :) And I don't consider it a rat dog.
I LOVE Beagles - super sweet personalities. But I've NEVER met a quiet one. They've definitely got hound blood in them and will bark/howl with the best of them.
You've never met mine... he doesn't bark for some reason, although he does howl (bay) at times when we're not there. :)
He's not 100% Beagle, though, so that could be why. I think he's about a quarter dachsund.

Also, he's not trained to do tricks or anything but he does the basics as well as most dogs (sit, stay, come, down, etc.)
