I live in an apartment, and my fiance wants to get a dog. I don't really mind dogs, but I do not like little fugly hairy yappers. How would a Great Dane or a Mastiff do in a med size apt? We have a nice sized back yard.

Thanks for all of your help and input. I'm kind of leaning towards getting a Yorkshire terrier or a shih tzu. So you guys know if either of them can handle loneliness? I'm single and work full time so I leave at 7:45 in the morning until 5:15, monday thru friday. I can come home to lunch a few times a week and my neighbor can help out the other days tending to its needs. I really do want and need a dog so I hope the loneliness won't hurt - that would be the biggest drawback in getting a dog in my case. I thought about getting a companion pet for the terrier or shih tzu, like maybe a cat or something to keep each other occupied. What do you guys think? Thanks for all you input.
