😱 sorry... wanted to add one more thing.

Plasmadocs has Ascend packages as well that you can customize but with SVS subs vs HSU subs.

I looked at a lot of info on the STF-2 and VTF-2 vs the SVS PB10 and for me it seemed like the PB10 came up on top.

I currently have one and am very happy with it.

I'm not sure how plasmadocs works their packages, but with Ascend you can purchase a "package" over time and still get the package discount.

extender purchase plan

So you could get a pair of 170s now and make sure you like them before getting the rest of the system within 45 days.

the HTM-200s being wall-mountable is exactly what i was hoping for. i figured the front speakers would be a bit closer to the sides of the tv (rather than against the corners of the room, anyway), center would go on top of or in front of the tv depending on what i could get away with, rears either mounted in the two back corners or on top of brackets that are mounted to the corners. the main thing to consider though, at least for me, is that i'm almost never going to be at an ideal sweet spot in the center of the room/in front of the tv. me and guests are usually going to be further back from the tv or in a corner etc.., if that makes any difference to you besides what angles i place the rears.

i haven't begun to look around for deals though or even a reciever. i didn't like the HK's because of their huge price to match their huge size, but i'd reconsider in a heartbeat if i could find a much lower price. i'm a bit too busy right now but hopefully by the end of the week i'll start seriously looking around.

Check out harmanaudio on ebay. I'm really glad I did for my first one. It was quite a positive experience.

if you can wait till december or so, ONIX will be releasing some new bookshelf speakers for $199 that are supposed to be groundbreaking. in addition, they will be offering a $99 amplifier that would be more than ample to power those bookshelves. all you would need is a quality source, and you could easily stay well below $1000 while having a system with amazing SQ.

Something else on the horizon are SVS's speakers.

A pre-order 5.1 set including a PB10 will run $899 + shipping. A quick initial review I saw was very positive on the set for the price.

Even with their relatively low efficiency rating, apparently there are no issues driving them good and loud with even a very basic receiver.

Ascend and Aperion are great budget audiophile quality speaker set-ups. Do your research and you'll find tons of rave reviews.

alright, i've been sidetracked for what seems like ever but i wanna seriously get back on track to putting together my system. i'm hoping i'll find some good deals between the coming black friday and after christmas. my price requirements are the same but i kinda realized that i'd probably be happy with almost any set of decent speakers since i'm a pretty flexible and patient guy, so i appreciate the recommendations i've recieved so far.

jello - the reciever at my parents house on the expensive speakers, its center speaker output doesn't work anymore so they're probably gonna be in the market for a new one too, i dunno if it's worth repairing. they only need it to support 5.1 and do pre-amp, i'll list its model if you're interested, i was thinking $6-800 would cover something to do the job? thoughts?

Check out the panasonic XR-55 for a receiver. My first choice was an $800 Onkyo, then Harmon Kardon but the Panasonic was just too good a receiver not to purchase. Read up on it over at AVSforum.com there are multiple people using it to replace $1000+ receivers (it offers as good of sound quality due to it's full digital design)

For speakers I went with a pair of Axiom M3Ti's . I'm using the speakers on my desk so all I needed was bookshelves and the M3ti's seemed like the best bookshelves for the price.

wow, that XR-55 looks pretty damn nice. what are Digital Coaxial inputs though?

at any rate, it's almost midnight and i still need to have lunch...

I don't think the Panasonic ones have pre-outs if that was a suggestion for his parents.

What kind do they have now? If they liked it, maybe just the updated model of it would be a good pick for them.

Harman Kardon, Denon, etc. make some nice ones in the $600-$800 range that would have pre-outs. There are plenty of lower end ones that have pre-outs as well.

Digital coax is like a digital optical connection but it's transmitted electronically rather than with light.
That's the kind of output you'd get from a DVD player or another 5.1 source.

an onkyo integra TX-DS838. RGB and digital audio (the single audio cable) are probably required too. i figured the xr-55 was probably for me though.

know anything about the new ELTs? is december the unveiling? i'd rather choose a receiver (I before E, why do you constantly forsake me!) first then move on to the speakers. though i was kinda partial to the ascends mentioned earlier, i'm up for whatever might be considered the best bang for the buck 5.1 setup i can create.

interesting. but besides the fact that i don't know what all those acronyms mean (CSE? PBS? :disgust: ), they're all rosewood and cherry birch. i was hoping for the (cheap?) 'wood painted black' look.

but i don't know, i was thinking of getting some new furniture too, i think these drawers in birch effect... i'm not really the guy to discern between attractive color combinations, think rosewood would work with such drawers?

Go to Best Buy and test out the Bose 321 system or if you might wanna go with something better like the "Life Style"....They are the best...

I'm using the Onkyo HTIB HT-S780 and so far I really like it. It's more than enough power for me, 7.1, and I got it for $350 w/DVD Player included. Can't beat that

CSE is the nicest speakers of the now gone ELT line... I think they were $300 or so each.

PBS is a powered bass station. They're on sale for $300 a pair now but that's significantly less than they were originally because the ELT line is discontinued.

The Birch ELTs are the standard ones that you saw on sale for $100/pair.

The ELT sub I'm not sure of the specs.

This is the rosewood color the rosewood parts would be in sample rosewood
That's the same color mine are.

Looks like that piece of furnature might be close to my component stand color. I don't think it looks too out of place in my set. pic

I think for $950 you're looking at about half price for what these would have been normally.

on that link, on the left hand side you can change the color of the furniture at the drop down menu. if you select birch effect for a color, you'll see the color i meant.

but uh, those CSEs were supposed to be center speakers, right? kinda hardcore to use those as stereos, no?

Oh, I think that birch is a bit pale to do with the rosewood in my eyes.

The CSEs were sold as singles to be used as centers or in pairs to be used as regular ones. Paired up with the bass stations I don't doubt they would be pretty serious speakers.

Why not just get a set of the Logitech 5750's? The ones with the wireless rear speakers?

Their little brothers, the 5500's, sound GREAT!
